Injuries and Suspended players

Liverpool continue to be without Mohamed Salah as his focus remains on his ongoing Africa Cup of Nations campaign. Alexander Isak's leg break also rules him out for the next several months. Liverpool were, however, boosted by the return of Cody Gakpo who made a small cameo appearance from the bench last time out against Wolves. Dominic Szoboszlai is also back and available having served a one-game suspension for his fifth yellow card of the season.

Leeds continue to be without Daniel James and Sean Longstaff because of injury. Farke suffered an additional blow after central defender Joe Rodon was forced off after just half an hour in their 1-1 draw against Sunderland earlier this week. Leeds did, however, welcome back Lukas Nmecha in that game, boosting their options in the final third.

Recent results have propelled Liverpool back into contention for Champions League qualification, as Arne Slot's side head into Matchday 19 three points clear in 4th place. The Dutchman's switch to a more compact 4-2-3-1 system appears to have had the desired effect in improving his side's stuttering form as well as getting the best out of summer recruits, particularly the effervescent Florian Wirtz who has been Liverpool's best player in this winter period. Scoring just four goals more than they have conceded at this point in the campaign tells its own story, however. Liverpool's defence was among the best in the division last season. This term, it has been rather more vulnerable - particularly from set-pieces.

Leeds, meanwhile, are unbeaten in the month of December with two wins and three draws including an Elland Road fightback against today's opponents. In fact, Leeds have trailed in three of these past five games giving coach Daniel Farke plenty to be encouraged by heading into the second half of the campaign. With eight goals in 16 games, summer transfer Dominic Calvert-Lewin is quickly proving to be one of the signings of the season.

Liverpool hold a clear historical advantage over Leeds in the two teams' overall head-to-head record with 63 wins to Leeds' 29.

However, Farke's men will be encouraged by the 3-3 draw they grabbed at Elland Road in early December. Leeds also won the last time these two side's met at Anfield back in in October 2022 thanks to a late goal from Crysencio Summerville.
