How the USMNT should line up vs Trinidad & Tobago: Malik Tillman deserves chance to shine with Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah ruled out

A national-team coach can never expect to have a true, 100 percent fit squad, but Gregg Berhalter has been dealt a tough hand this time around. With a spot in the 2024 Copa America on the line, the U.S. men's national team is missing several key players as they prepare to face Trinidad & Tobago across two legs over the coming days.

Tyler Adams is out, and will be for the foreseeable future, leaving a hole in the midfield. However, the bigger issue is the absence of both Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah, leaving the U.S. without both of the team's starting wingers.

It's a tough situation, missing two-thirds of the attack, but there are a number of routes Berhalter can go to replace them. Gio Reyna will almost certainly be key to that, but the question is where he'll be deployed on the field with Weah and Pulisic out.

With that said, GOAL how the U.S. should start when they face T&T for the first time in Austin on Thursday:

  • Matt Turner USMNT 2023Getty

    GK: Matt Turner

Not only does Turner deserve this start, he also needs this start, having fallen out of Nottingham Forest's starting XI in recent weeks. Because of that, this match seems like a good opportunity for the goalkeeper to regain a bit of confidence.

  • Antonee Robinson USMNT United States 2022 World CupGetty

    LB: Antonee Robinson

An injury kept him out of October camp, giving Joe Scally and Kristoffer Lund spots in the XI. This camp, though, is the 'Return of the Jedi', and Robinson will be taking his spot right back.

The Fulham left-back is still the unquestioned starter in that spot for the national team, and though he'll be feeling a slight push from Lund now that he's involved, the Palermo defender still has a lot of catching up to do.

  • Tim Ream USMNT 2022Getty

    CB: Tim Ream

Ream is a steady hand that looks bound for one more big tournament, and he'll have a part to play in helping the U.S. get there. The veteran is still going strong for Fulham and the USMNT, despite being 36, and he provides a steady presence and some calmness on the ball that should be helpful considering the fact that the U.S. will dominate possession.

  • Chris Richards USMNT 2023Getty Images

    CB: Chris Richards

This one feels like a toss-up, as this spot could go to either Richards or Cameron Carter-Vickers. Miles Robinson is also in the mix, but given his recent struggles in the MLS Playoffs, it feels like it's one of the European-based pair who will partner Ream.

Carter-Vickers is back healthy, so that does change the equation from previous camps, but Richards has been the player Berhalter has leant on since his return to the sideline. Either way, the coach probably can't go wrong, but with Richards needing minutes, we'll go with him.

  • Sergino Dest USMNT Netherlands World Cup 2022Getty Images

    RB: Sergino Dest

You know what you're getting with Dest, who is a player that can change games such as these with his ability to get forward. There will be times where the U.S. may just need that extra spark of creativity, and Dest is just be the guy to provide it.

Scally will get his chances down he line, and his skillset likely will apply to bigger games against better opponents. For this one, though, it's all Dest.

  • Weston McKennie USMNT 2023-24Getty Images

    CM: Weston McKennie

McKennie is in good form with Juventus, and he'll be extra important once again this camp. With Adams out, there's even more pressure on McKennie to be a leader in the midfield.

It's a good thing for the U.S. that he's playing well, then, as he seems to have rediscovered the confidence that was totally nuked during that loan spell at Leeds.

  • Yunus Musah USMNT 2023-24Getty Images

    CM: Yunus Musah

Like McKennie, Musah is also thriving in Serie A at the minute. The midfielder has broken into the AC Milan starting XI, earning himself some huge minutes in some massive games. His defensive skills seem to be improving and we all know how smooth he is on the ball, so everything seems to be trending in the right direction.

  • Tillman USMNT 2023Getty

    CAM: Malik Tillman

Berhalter has a tough choice to make for that third midfield spot. He could go with a No. 6 in Lennard Maloney or Luca de la Torre. He could also go with Reyna in this spot, but more on him later...

To maximize the talent on the field, it would make sense to start Tillman in this spot. He's been in good form for PSV and is a legitimate difference-maker in the attacking end. In a game that may just call for some magic in the final third, it makes sense to have as many options on the field as possible, and Tillman fits that bill.

  • Brenden Aaronson USMNT 2022 World CupGetty

    LW: Brenden Aaronson

We've talked plenty about players in this team being in good form, but Aaronson is not one of those players. He's struggled a bit with Union Berlin, but with the U.S. needing healthy bodies on the wing, he is a reliable option. Berhalter knows what he'll get from Aaronson: energy, effort, a dose of some creativity.

If not Aaronson, Alejandro Zendejas is the man in form and has been scoring in bunches for Club America. Kevin Paredes, too, could start, although it would be a big step up for the young Wolfsburg winger.

We'll keep those two as bench options in case the U.S. needs a bit of help later on and we'll go with Aaronson to try and tire T&T out a bit.

  • Folarin Balogun USMNT 2023Getty

    ST: Folarin Balogun

Put this one in Sharpie: Balogun is starting. He's the go-to striker and is still developing chemistry with his USMNT teammates. This group may not include some of the most important of those teammates, but every game does help, for sure. Because of that, Balogun starts, and if he doesn't have it, Ricardo Pepi is a heck of an option off the bench.

  • Gio Reyna USMNT 2023Getty

    RW: Gio Reyna

As promised, here's Reyna, though it's a tough one for Berhalter. He insisted Reyna was a winger last cycle, but at the start of this one, the Borussia Dortmund star has looked a hell of a lot better as a No.10. However, desperate times call for desperate measures, so Reyna moves back out wide to cover for the absence of others.

The goal is to get as many good players onto the field as possible, and moving Reyna out wide to get Tillman in accomplishes that. Reyna will drift around to make things happen, and regardless of where he plays, can be the difference-maker.
