'My advice would be to just give him time' - MLS icon Bradley Wright-Phillips urges patience with American prodigy Cavan Sullivan

Amid rumors that Cavan Sullivan is set to start training with Manchester City ahead of a potential permanent move in 2027. The 15-year-old prodigy has earned a lot of hype over the last few years, especially after he became the youngest player to play in the MLS at the age of 14. These reports come after Sullivan’s family confirmed that his contract with the Philadelphia Union has a clause that calls for a transfer to Manchester City once he turns 18.

In light of that, Bradley Wright-Phillips emphasized that while Sullivan's talent is undeniable, City supporters should recognize he remains a developing talent who needs time and space. He also praised the 15-year-old’s talent and ability on the field, saying he has a bright future ahead.

“Yeah, they should definitely be excited,” Wright-Phillips told the Overlap US when asked how much City fans should be excited. “He’s a clever, brave, will always want to get on the ball, good feet, goes past players, but he’s young. I’ve had experience coaching against Cavan, and he’s a bright player, he’s very good, but I would suggest just leave him. Just let him learn, let him play, let him get experience because the more we blow these kids up, the harder it is for him.

“What I did like on the show that we have on Apple TV, where we get a good look at him as a kid, and I wasn’t sure what he’d be like, but he can handle himself. There are some clips of him in training, he’s getting in fights with senior players, respectfully though, but he’s not shying away from where he is. But my advice would be to just give him time.”

Despite making his debut for Philadelphia Union in the 2024 MLS season, Sullivan ended the season with only 10 minutes of game time across three appearances. This season while he has majorly featured for the Philadelphia Union II, Sullivan has already made three appearances for the club with a total of 45 minutes of game time so far.

For the moment, Manchester City fans will be keeping a close eye on Cavan Sullivan’s development at Philadelphia Union, especially as the 2025 season progresses. The 15-year-old American has already showcased his prodigious talent over the last year or so and has attracted a lot of hype as a result.
