Man Utd's youngest-ever player David Gaskell - plucked from the crowd to make his debut at 16 - dies aged 84

A week on from the passing of club legend Denis Law, Manchester United remain in mourning after news filtered through of Gaskell's death at the age of 84. He spent 13 years with the club from the age of 15, recruited for the youth team and going on to make 118 appearances.

Although never an established number one, the goalkeeper often filled in for Harry Gregg during injury absences, notably playing in the 1963 FA Cup final, United's first trophy since the Munich air disaster. In 2022, he was retrospectively awarded league championship winner's medals for the 1964-65 and 1966-67 seasons, after the EFL reduced its minimum number of appearances for players to receive one from 14 down to five. Gaskell left Old Trafford in 1968, having been relegated to third choice, going on to play for Wigan Athletic and Wrexham, before finishing his career abroad in South Africa and Kuwait.

In a statement published by Manchester United, the Gaskell family said: "Dave was devoted to his beloved wife, Barbara, with whom he shared 68 wonderful years of marriage. He was a proud father to his three daughters, Michelle, Lesley, and Nicola, and a loving grandfather to Joel, Emily, Eleanor, Ted, and Edith. His family was his greatest joy, and his legacy will live on through them. 

"In these past few weeks of illness, Dave was surrounded by the love and support of the many friends he made throughout his life—friends who, like so many in Wrexham and beyond, will miss him dearly.

"Dave Gaskell leaves behind not just a remarkable sporting legacy, but an enduring example of kindness, dedication, and humility. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him."

Gaskell was perhaps the ultimate Busby Babein the truest sense of the label, handed his United debut at the age of just 16 years and 19 days in October 1956. It remains a club record as the youngest player in Manchester United history.

That appearance was as a substitute in the Charity Shield at Manchester City's Maine Road. It came unexpectedly, initially going to the game just as a spectator but pulled out of the crowd by first-team coach Bert Whalley and borrowing a team-mate's spare boots when senior goalkeeper Ray Wood got injured.

Gaskell was immediately promoted from the youth team to the first-team by Matt Busby and went on to make his Football League debut the following year. He was not part of the travelling squad at the time of the Munich air disaster in 1958.

Manchester United will pay respects to Gaskell, with the players likely to wear black armbands once more for Sunday night's Premier League trip to Fulham. It is a poignant time of the year for the club, with February 6 marking the 57th anniversary of the Munich air disaster that claimed the lives of eight players, three club staff and 12 other people. The club has upcoming home games at Old Trafford against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Leicester City in the FA Cup on February 2 and 7 respectively.
