Man Utd ratings vs Wigan Athletic: Kobbie Mainoo is a boss! Teenage midfield sensation guides Red Devils to FA Cup victory with dominant display as Diogo Dalot & Bruno Fernandes come up with the goods

Manchester United finally returned to winning ways away from home and booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win at Wigan Athletic.

United had only lost once in their previous 19 games against Wigan but could scarcely afford another defeat given their abysmal recent run of results and success in the FA Cup could be the only way to salvage something from this nightmare of a season.

Ten Hag named his strongest side possible against the League One strugglers and despite a nervy start they dominated the first half, taking a deserved lead with a fine curling effort from Diogo Dalot while Rasmus Hojlund missed three chances, one of which was an absolute sitter, and Alejandro Garnacho hammered the bar.

United eased off a bit in the second half and their lead looked slender until Bruno Fernandes made sure of the victory, winning a penalty with some nifty footwork and burying the ball in the net from the spot. He scarcely celebrated the goal, a demonstration that a win was the most basic requirement. At least United got it, earning their first victory away from Old Trafford since beating Everton in November.

  • Andre Onana Man Utd WiganGetty

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Andre Onana (6/10):

Made himself big to thwart Thelo Aasgaard in the third minute and that was all he had to do.

    Aaron Wan-Bissaka (6/10):

Composed and more assured defensively than Dalot.

    Raphael Varane (6/10):

Kept the defence orderly for most of the game.

    Jonny Evans (6/10):

His experience shone through and he calmly dealt with everything the hosts threw at him.

    Diogo Dalot (7/10):

The only player to keep his head in front of goal, netting with a lovely, curling finish. Booted a shot deep into the stand later on and was a little suspect defensively.

  • Bruno Fernandes Man Utd WiganGetty

    Midfield

    Kobbie Mainoo (8/10):

A class act. Decisive and dominating, the first line of defence and the foundation of United's best attacking moves.

    Scott McTominay (5/10):

Had some nice touches but needs to get involved more and be less wasteful in front of goal.

    Bruno Fernandes (7/10):

Not his finest display but still key to the victory, not least for winning and converting the penalty to put the game to bed.

  • Alejandro Garnacho Man Utd WiganGetty

    Attack

    Alejandro Garnacho (7/10):

Wigan struggled to cope with his trickery and he always looked dangerous, especially when he hammered the crossbar.

    Rasmus Hojlund (4/10):

A night to forget for the Dane. Had plenty of chances but couldn't convert them and spurned a real sitter, perhaps his worst miss in a Red shirt.

    Marcus Rashford (4/10):

Another miserable performance. Misplaced too many passes and struggled to beat his first man.

  • Subs & Manager

    Willy Kambwala (N/A):

    Introduced in the 83rd minute.

    Facundo Pellistri (N/A):

Came on in the 86th minute.

    Hannibal Mejbri (N/A):

    Came on in added time.

    Erik ten Hag (6/10):

Took no chances with his starting XI and used his subs sparingly, but what does it say about Altay Bayindir that he didn't even trust him for a game like this?
