  • WHAT HAPPENED?

United had been linked with a move for Werner as they look to strengthen in attack in the January transfer window, while the Germany international's struggles at RB Leipzig made him a realistic target. United, however, eventually decided against going after the 27-year-old.

    THE EXPLANATION

According to reporter Fabrizio Romano, United had their eye on the ex-Chelsea player but decided not to pursue a deal because they are not quite sure which type of player they want to bring to Old Trafford this month.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Werner will instead join Tottenham on a loan deal until the end of the season with an option to buy him on a permanent basis this summer. United, on the other hand, will consider other options to enhance Erik ten Hag's squad as incoming partial owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS develop a new transfer strategy.

    WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED?

Before they can bring in new signings this month, United will take on Wigan in the FA Cup third round on Monday. Days later, they could come up against Werner when they take on Tottenham on January 14, if his loan deal is confirmed by then.
