The Red Dragons enjoyed another busy summer on the recruitment front, with Phil Parkinson making seven additions to his squad – with Arthur Okonkwo a familiar face that was acquired on a permanent basis after reaching the end of his contract at Arsenal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham have made a flying start to life in League One, picking up 10 points from their opening four games. They are already sat among the promotion frontrunners – along with big-spending Birmingham and fellow third tier newcomers Stockport – and the Welsh outfit are being tipped to sustain a challenge for back-to-back-to-back promotions.

  • WHAT PALMER SAID

That is the opinion of former EFL star Carlton Palmer, who has told Football League World of how the Red Dragons can keep themselves in contention: “(It's been an) unbelievable start to the season for Wrexham. They have spent well. You look at Birmingham who have spent a lot of money, the Jay Stansfield signing is a signal of their intent, but when you are able to spend money to buy players that are better than the league you’re playing in, you give yourself a chance of promotion. I fully expect Wrexham to go on, and only two teams go up automatically in League One so it’s going to be interesting.

“I fancy Huddersfield to be strong, although they got beaten over the weekend, Birmingham are going to be very strong too. Between Wrexham, Huddersfield, Birmingham and Stockport, I think there will be the two automatic promotion winners. You know Wrexham, they will go again in the January transfer window if they’re there or thereabouts (at the top). It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Wrexham go up again. It’s a very, very competitive league, so it’ll be interesting to see, but I fully expect Wrexham to be either in first or second, or in the play-offs.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

Wrexham, whose strength in depth is highlighted by the fact that prolific striker Paul Mullin is yet to reclaim a starting berth since returning from injury, are due to be back in action on Saturday when taking in a derby date with cross-border rivals Shrewsbury.
