The Scottish Premiership has long been a hotbed of talent, with some of the most passionate football fans on the planet. It's a division often defined by the Old Firm, but there's far more to it than that, with some of the fiercest derbies and biggest shocks. Outside of the usual two-horse race, anyway...

Watching Scotland's top division is growing in popularity, particularly as many of the best players and managers make their way south into the likes of the Premier League. But what are the best ways to live stream the Scottish Premiership today?

Which broadcasters have the rights to the Scottish Premiership?

There are two main broadcasters who currently have the rights to Scottish Premiership football, Sky Sports and the BBC. However, you can only watch live matches throughout the season on Sky Sports, with the Beeb only offering highlights.

Each season Sky Sports broadcasts 48 live games across the Scottish Professional Football League, with that figure due to rise to 60 matches for the 2024/25 season onwards.

In terms of BBC coverage, you'll find a highlights package each weekend with all the goals, best bits and analysis, while the broadcaster also has rights to 27 live SPFL Championship games on BBC Scotland across the season.

Best TV packages to watch Scottish Premiership live soccer in 2023

Naturally, if you are wanting to watch Scottish Premiership action across the season, then you're going to ideally need a package with Sky Sports, otherwise you'll be watching the league competition in a more condensed highlights form.

It's Sky Sports that you really need though if you want to stream the likes of Celtic and Rangers on a weekly basis. The broadcaster shows a number of Scottish football matches each week, from the very early stages of the season to the second phase when it comes down to the business end.

There are a number of Sky Sports packages available, so you can watch the Scottish Professional Football League Premiership, all suiting a variety of budgets. These are detailed below...

    Sky TV, Netflix & Sports

Sky TV, Netflix & Sports is becoming a popular Sky TV package at present, priced at £46 per month. This is because it's a rolling contract with no installation or sign-up fees. Unlike other Sky packages, it doesn't use a satellite dish, but is rather connected to your Wi-Fi, allowing you to set-up the package and start streaming Sky Sports in no time at all.

Of course, if you are to go for this package, which also includes a Netflix subscription, you are going to need a solid Wi-Fi connection. The last thing you want is it to start buffering in the last few minutes of the Old Firm!

    Complete Sky Sports

A good option for those already with Sky TV, you can get Sky Sports added to your package for an additional £24 per month. The most basic Sky TV subscription begins at around the £23 per month mark, so you'd be looking at a similar cost to the Sky TV, Netflix & Sports package, but on a minimum 18-month term. This gives you all the Sky Sports channels, including the eight dedicated sports channels.

There are other options available too. You are able to add just one Sky Sports channel to your Sky TV package for £18 per month. In this case you'd want Sky Sports Football, to stream SPFL games.

    Sky Glass & Sky Sports

Sky Glass is the new all-singing, all-dancing offering from Sky TV, which provides you with a television and built in Sky. Naturally, it comes in at a higher price, beginning at £35 per month for your television and Sky Sports, but rising significantly after three months.

Of course, price points are dependent on the size of the television you want, so it is worth exploring your options fully here.

    NOW TV

Now TV is Sky TV's streaming platform that allows you to get the likes of movies or sports on a monthly subscription fee. It's available on many smart TVs these days, alongside being able to purchase via a HDMI plug-in too. You can also download Now TV as an app or watch Scottish Premiership on it through your laptop or desktop device.

To get Sky Sports through Now TV, it's £33.99 per month, giving you access to all their channels with no fixed contract. Similarly to the Netflix package, it is reliant on your Wi-Fi connection, so ensure you have a broadband package capable of good quality streaming.

    Sky Sports 24 Hour Passes

If there are only a handful of games you're interested in each season, such as the Edinburgh or Glasgow derbies, then you might just want to consider a 24 hour pass. These are available through Now TV or your Sky TV subscription, priced at £11.98 per day.

Ideal for watching a big Rangers or Celtic game, you can do this as few or as many times as you wish, but of course if you are using it regularly, it can work out more cost-effective to just purchase a package.

Sky Sports can also be picked up through other TV subscription packages too. TNT Sports via BT TV has the Big Sport package at £43 per month, which will provide you with all Sky Sports channels, as well as TNT Sports, meaning you can watch a host more men's professional football clubs outside of Scottish football too.

TNT Sports offers a range of Premier League games, as well as European leagues, providing you with the most comprehensive football package available today.

There is a £39.99 installation cost with this, as well as a fixed term of 24 months.

  • Virgin Media laptopGetty Images / GOALFind the best deals

Similarly, Virgin Media can offer you the full works when it comes to sports channels, which may be a bit too much if you're only interested in the Scottish Professional Football League. For £72 per month, you'll get all the Sky Sports channels and TNT Sports, but this also includes Virgin Fibre broadband and a phone line deal within it, so you're paying for a much larger package.

This could be hugely cost-effective, but also not at all depending on what packages you have for your internet and phone bills.

  • Naturally, having access to BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer is a must for anyone wanting to catch up on the weekend's action in Scottish football's top division, as you can't live stream games at 3pm on a Saturday in the UK anyway. However, if you are looking for live games across the weekend then you are going to need Sky Sports.

The best package for you is perhaps the Now TV option at £33.99 per month. However, if you are a user of Netflix, then packaging them up into one with the Sky TV, Netflix and Sports could well be a more cost-efficient option for you.

    Scottish Premiership FAQs

When does the Scottish Professional Football League season take place?

The Scottish Premiership runs in line with the rest of the European and British football season, getting underway in early August and running through to the end of May. The season is split up into two phases, with the top and bottom halves of the league competition being separated into the top and bottom six. These teams then play each other once to determine the final table.

How does a team qualify for the Scottish Premiership?

Teams can enter the Scottish Premiership via promotion from the Scottish Championship. The Scottish football system works in exactly the same was as the English one, with teams from the second division eligible for promotion to the top division. One team is promoted each season, the winner of the Championship, with one team relegated out of the Premiership.

At the end of each season there is also a Premiership Play-Off Final, in which the team that finishes 11th in the top division takes on the winner of a play-off tournament between the teams that finish second to fourth in the Championship.

When did the Scottish Premiership start?

The Scottish Premiership itself is only around a decade old, with the Scottish Professional Football League being founded as the result of a merger between the Scottish Premier League and the Scottish Football League.

Of course, Scottish football predates that significantly, with the likes of Rangers, Celtic and Aberdeen all having huge domestic and European success throughout history.

Which team has won the most Scottish Premiership titles?

In terms of the Premiership alone, Celtic have won all but one titles of this era, with Rangers claiming the other in 2020/21. However, looking further back in history and across the top division of Scottish football, Rangers are just about pipping their Glasgow neighbours.

Rangers at present have 55 titles to their name, with Celtic on 53, while Aberdeen has four, tied with Edinburgh outfits Hearts and Hibs.
