USMNT player ratings vs Uzbekistan: Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman make big statements off bench in Gregg Berhalter's first game back

The scoreline, ultimately, won't paint the whole picture. It ended as a 3-0 win, a lopsided one on paper at least, but the U.S. men's national team's win over Uzbekistan was anything but. Instead, it was about as nervy and frustrating as could be.

An early goal from Tim Weah seemingly set the tone, but it took until the final moments for the U.S. to really make their mark on the game as two substitutes made massive statements. Weah was joined on the scoresheet by Ricardo Pepi, who scored a much-needed goal in his push for more minutes, as well as Christian Pulisic, who buried a late penalty kick to flatter the USMNT.

USMNT starters combined for two of the goals, but it was the substitutes that will leave feeling best about their day. Pepi, obviously, will have boosted his stock, and Malik Tillman will feel the same after earning the penalty ahead of Pulisic's goal.

The goals were nice, but everything in between left a different impression. From minute five to minute 90, the U.S. showed plenty of familiar faults, particularly in the attacking end. Gregg Berhalter's side, by and large, was in control, running up possession and passing numbers throughout. Those numbers, though, didn't lead to goals until the very last moments of a game that looked, at any point, like it could slip away.

How you view that will depend on your mindset. The optimist will see a 3-0 win, a job well done and a team that proved it can close out a game. The pessimist, though, will see familiar problems that, at least on this day, may remain a bit under the radar thanks to the impact of two late subs.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Matt Turner (8/10):

Several big saves throughout to keep the USMNT in it, including one fantastic stop when star forward Eldor Shomurodov was in all alone. Without Turner in goal, the U.S. may not win this one.

    Antonee Robinson (7/10):

Absolutely lockdown on that left-hand side. Exactly what you come to expect from a player that never seems to put a foot wrong for the U.S.

    Tim Ream (5/10):

Largely good, but one big moment of sloppiness knocks his score down a little. Bad giveaways against good teams will kill you, and Ream will know that more than most given his experience. Fortunately for him, Uzbekistan couldn't capitalize.

    Chris Richards (6/10):

A solid performance from the Crystal Palace defender, who looked crisp despite his lack of minutes on the club level.

    Sergino Dest (7/10):

A typical game from him as he got forward and combined well with Weah. Wasn't quite dangerous enough higher up the field, though, aside from one fantastic chance that was blocked away in the 73rd minute.

    Midfield

    Weston McKennie (7/10):

Absolute magic on the goal, as he danced around the box before teeing up his club teammate Weah. It was the type of moment and skill that can win you games, and it did on Saturday.

    Luca de la Torre (7/10):

Unfortunate for the midfielder, who was playing well before his injury. That broken nose robbed him of a chance to impress and, based on the 30 minutes or so he was on the field, he was on his way towards boosting his stock with a solid performance as the No. 6

    Yunus Musah (5/10):

A quiet night for Musah, who never quite took control of any one aspect of the game. In an ideal world, it would be nice to see him played as the six in the next game.

    Attack

    Christian Pulisic (6/10):

Got the late goal, but was uncharacteristically quiet other than that. It felt like the type of game Pulisic could, and should, take over, but it didn't happen.

    Folarin Balogun (6/10):

Was kept largely out of the game through his 45 minutes save for one big chance. Unfortunately for the Monaco man, that chance hit the post as he was that close to scoring his second USMNT goal.

    Tim Weah (8/10):

His strong start to life in Juve clearly carried over. May have been aided a bit by a deflection, but did a great job to get his goal, putting to bed any questions about his transition from wingback to winger.

    Subs & Manager

    Tanner Tessman (4/10):

Looked like an Uzbekistan goal waiting to happen. Almost gave one away moments after coming on, which you can understand considering his lack of warmup, but it never really got better as he was far too sloppy on the ball.

    Ricardo Pepi (8/10):

All it took was one moment, and Pepi didn't waste it. The young forward called for the ball from Aaronson and hit the snot out of it, giving the goalkeeper no chance. A big goal for a player looking to make a statement.

    Brenden Aaronson (7/10):

Ran around plenty and got the assist on Pepi's goal with a nice layoff.

    Mark McKenzie (6/10):

Passing was fine, but didn't need to do much defensively.

    Malik Tillman (7/10):

Came in very late, but made a big impact in drawing the penalty. Would be great to see him get more minutes in a No. 10 spot going forward.

    Kristoffer Lund (N/A):

A memorable moment for the new USMNT defender, who was given 10 or so minutes in his first cap.

    Gregg Berhalter (5/10):

Not the type of attacking performance that will inspire confidence. It's one of the big questions of this cycle: what can the U.S. do to create and score more chances? The answer didn't really come on Saturday, despite the late flurry.
