'Talks are ongoing' - Bayern Munich confirm negotiations over new contract for defender Dayot Upamecano

  • Contract ticking down - Bayern and Upamecano yet to find agreement

Upamecano’s Bayern contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026, and while both sides have expressed a desire to continue together, no agreement has been reached yet. The 26-year-old’s representatives have held preliminary discussions with the club, but negotiations have stalled over financial terms and the potential inclusion of a release clause. Bayern’s management are wary of repeating past mistakes after losing Leroy Sane for free earlier this year and have made Upamecano’s renewal a top priority. However, with time ticking, the lack of progress has raised concerns within the Bayern hierarchy.

Hainer’s comments and why Upamecano matters under Kompany

Club president Herbert Hainer confirmed the situation in an interview with AZ, saying: “Talks are ongoing to get a new deal done for Dayot Upamecano. Of course, I hope that Dayot will stay with us for a long time to come.”

Under coach Vincet Kompany, Upamecano has re-emerged as one of Bayern’s most reliable defenders. His pace, aerial dominance, and ability to play out from the back have been crucial to Kompany’s high-possession system. This season, he has already registered the most successful tackles per 90 minutes in the squad and ranks among the top five in completed passes in the Bundesliga. Beyond statistics, his leadership and composure make him an essential part of Bayern’s defensive spine.

  • Bayern’s renewal drive continues with Harry Kane

Bayern’s board are not stopping with Upamecano. Talks are also planned with Harry Kane, whose current deal runs until 2027 but includes a €65m (£55m/$76m) release clause that activates in 2026. The England captain has been nothing short of sensational since arriving from Tottenham, scoring over 100 Bundesliga goals in just 104 appearances.

Sporting director Max Eberl recently confirmed that Bayern are looking to extend Kane’s stay well beyond 2027: “A collaboration beyond 2027 is absolutely conceivable. He’s a leader, and we want to keep building around him.” Kane has echoed similar sentiments, saying he’s “really happy” in Munich and keen to win more titles. Securing extensions for both Kane and Upamecano will be central to Bayern’s long-term vision under Kompany.

Real Madrid, Liverpool, PSG waiting in the wings

While Bayern are optimistic about reaching an agreement, time is not on their side. Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain are all closely monitoring Upamecano’s situation. Madrid view him as a potential long-term replacement for Antonio Rudiger, Liverpool see him as an ideal successor to Ibrahima Konate, and PSG have long admired the defender’s consistency and French roots. Should Bayern fail to finalise the renewal soon, these clubs could move quickly, especially with Upamecano eligible to negotiate a pre-contract by January 2026.
