Premier League to run TWO different summer transfer windows?! FIFA Club World Cup could bring dramatic change

An expanded event run by world football’s governing body is due to get underway on June 14. It will run until July 13, by which point those players seeing their respective contracts run down will technically have become free agents.

FIFA has revealed plans for an interim window between June 1-10, allowing those clubs involved in the CWC to bolster their squads while also agreeing short-term extensions with players that could be moving on – such as Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, Joshua Kimmich at Bayern Munich and Real Madrid trio Luka Modric, Ferland Mendy and Lucas Vazquez.

Those teams not taking part in the Club World Cup are understandably concerned that they are going to be left at a disadvantage if certain rivals can dip into the market before everybody else. That is forcing the Premier League to consider splitting their summer window.

FIFA regulations dictate that a transfer window can only be open for a maximum of 89 days, which would lead to a slightly early closure – with European and Saudi Pro League clubs still able to do business – if the 2025 market were to remain open from June 1.

As a result, The Guardian reports on how the Premier League is proposing a split window that opens at the start of June, for everybody, and closes when the CWC begins. It will then resume later in the month and run through to the end of August/early September as usual.
