'I follow all the rumours' - Oliver Glasner responds to Man Utd speculation as pressure builds on Ruben Amorim after latest bad result

Glasner is hot property right now. The 51-year-old took Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2021-22, before being appointed by Palace in 2024. He then delivered the club's first ever major trophy last season, beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

This season, Palace are the only team in the top four divisions of English football yet to lose a game in any competition – thanks to inflicting Liverpool's first loss of 2025-26 on Saturday – and are on an 18-game unbeaten streak that stretches back to last April.

That's even with Palace losing talisman Eberechi Eze to Arsenal and having to deal with the distraction of Marc Guehi's uncertain future and the challenges from that.

Ahead of facing Brentford, talk was about United aiming to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since Amorim took charge 11 months ago. Instead, his team found themselves 2-0 down inside the opening 20 minutes and fell to a fourth defeat (including the penalty shootout against Grimsby Town) from seven games across all competitions this season.

The goodwill that Amorim was able to fall back on during his first campaign in the job – due to implementing a brand new style and having to work with solely inherited players – is fast running out. His rigid loyalty to a 3-4-2-1 system that the United squad are clearly struggling to get to grips with is bringing increased scrutiny and criticism of his overall managerial ability.

It has been reported that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has final say on sporting decisions, is "refusing to panic", but it's difficult to envisage Amorim having limitless leeway if results continue as they have been.

Glasner has taken questions from the Austrian edition of Kicker, during which the subject of Manchester United 'in the short-term' was brought up.

The Palace boss stayed diplomatic and didn't rule anything out, suggesting that he knows what is being said and reported, but that rumours is all anything is for the time being.

"I follow all the rumours – and that's all there is – neutrally and completely relaxed. Focusing on the daily work with my players and coaches, and trying to enjoy it as much as possible," he said.

Glasner has already taken Palace into Europe for the first time in their history – controversially the Conference League rather than the Europa League – and given their form in the early months of 2025-26 there is already talk of going one better.

Palace sit third in the Premier League table as it stands, mirroring Nottingham Forest for much of last season until falling away in the final stretch and missing out on the Champions League.

Asked if Palace could be competing in next season's Champions League, Glasner replied: "We're not worried about the final standings at the moment. I'm very down-to-earth and don't forget that last season we had the worst Premier League start in Palace's history, which ended with a record points haul."

Palace fans might feel uneasy that Glasner is out of contract at the end of this season, at the same time that his record with the club has made him such an attractive target to bigger teams.

Beyond the possibility that Manchester United cut ties with Amorim midway through the season, the Eagles could be at risk of losing Glasner before the start of 2026-27.

The only upside of him being poached during the campaign is that Palace could demand compensation if someone else – United or otherwise – wanted to hire him with immediate effect.

Continuing with the example of the Old Trafford club, who have also been linked with pragmatic ex-England manager Gareth Southgate once more in recent days, there is the possibility of dispensing with Amorim and appointing an interim until Glasner becomes a free agent in the summer.

However, the last time United opted for that approach, Ralf Rangnick endured a difficult run and spoke very bluntly about the poor state of the squad he was working with.
