    WHAT HAPPENED?

Reports have suggested that the former Manchester United forward, who is now starring in France for Marseille, is one signature away from committing to the Reggae Boyz. His solitary senior cap for the Three Lions was earned in a Nations League match with Iceland in September 2020.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Greenwood is now ready to join the Jamaican ranks, which he qualifies for through his father, but the relevant paperwork there is not as close to being completed as some have suggested. There is, however, still hope that everything will be processed shortly.

    WHAT JAMAICA CHIEF SAID

Dennis Chung, general secretary of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), has said in the Jamaica Star of Greenwood being close to severing ties with the England national team: “I do not know where that came from. Nothing has changed for us. It is the same situation.”

He added: “We are basically waiting on a document. That is all we are waiting on but we have been waiting on that for a little while and there is still no timeline on when that documentation will be completed.”

  • WHAT NEXT FOR GREENWOOD?

Greenwood can switch allegiance to Jamaica as his one appearance for England came while under the age of 21. If a green light is secured in the coming weeks, then the 23-year-old winger – who is the top scorer in Ligue 1 this season with 12 goals to his name – could form part of Jamaica manager Steve McClaren’s plans for 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
