Liverpool player ratings vs Leicester City: Dutch duo Ryan Gravenberch and Cody Gakpo get Reds going before Dominik Szoboszlai stunner seals Carabao Cup comeback

Ryan Gravenberch and his international team-mate Cody Gakpo combined for a crucial Liverpool goal as the Reds came from behind to beat Leicester CIty in the Carabao Cup third round. Gakpo netted the equaliser early in the second half, while a thunderous strike from Dominik Szoboszlai, and a deft flick Diogo Jota carried the Reds to an ultimately comfortable 3-1 win.

Liverpool continued their recent trend of conceding early, as Kasey McAteer finished past Caoimhin Kelleher after a well-worked counter in the third minute. The Reds' response was a strong, though, as Ben Doak hit the woodwork, Gakpo had an effort smartly denied by Jakub Stolarczyk, Jota squandered a chance from two yards out with the goal gaping and Conor Coady cleared a Gakpo header off the line.

The Reds eventually equalised, with Gravenberch setting up Gakpo, who pivoted and fired home the leveller shortly after half-time. Gakpo should have added a second a few minutes later, but his lofted header hit the bar.

Szoboszlai came off the bench to eventually turn the tie around, lashing a shot in off the bar from 25 yards out. And Jota sealed things, directing Jarell Quansah's cross into the far corner with a clever backheel.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Caoimhin Kelleher (6/10):

Couldn't do much about McAteer's goal. Was mostly a spectator otherwise.

    Curtis Jones (6/10):

Did the inverted full-back thing well in possession, but his defensive weaknesses were exposed when Leicester hit on the break.

    Ibrahima Konate (7/10):

Covered for Jones a lot, and kept things ticking at the back. A mature performance.

    Jarell Quansah (8/10):

Could have been tighter to his man when Leicester scored, but he made some important tackles, and distributed well. A promising showing from the youngster, who has impressed so far.

    Kostas Tsimikas (7/10):

Caught out in the run up to Leicester's opener — even if he felt he was fouled. Much improved thereafter, and was dangerous in advanced areas.

    Midfield

    Harvey Elliott (5/10):

Started brightly, but faded after. Still not clear if he's a midfielder or winger.

    Wataru Endo (6/10):

Put in some tackles, won some headers, and covered a lot of ground. Wasn't always particularly tidy on the ball, though.

    Ryan Gravenberch (8/10):

Some of his marauding runs were wonderful, and he was a real threat in the final third. Assisted Gakpo after a lovely piece of skill. Looked tired when removed from the game.

    Attack

    Ben Doak (6/10):

Offered pace and trickery on the wing, but his final product was lacking. He's an exciting prospect who will need time.

    Cody Gakpo (8/10):

Bagged the equaliser with an incisive finish. Might have added one or two more. Finished the game in midfield, where he looked more-than comfortable.

    Diogo Jota (7/10):

Really should have scored in the first half. Caused problems with his energy and directness on the break. A wonderful backheel added an exclamation mark to the result.

  • Dominik Szoboszlai Liverpool 2023-24Getty Images

    Subs & Manager

    Dominik Szoboszlai (7/10):

Scored a worldie to give his side the lead.

    Darwin Nunez (7/10):

Full of energy when he entered, and made life difficult for the Leicester backline.

    Stefan Bajcetic (N/A):

A handy cameo to give Jones a rest.

    Jurgen Klopp (7/10):

Rotated heavily with one eye on Saturday's clash with Spurs. Liverpool conceded early — again — but created chances in spades. Five or six wouldn't have flattered them.
