Levi Colwill at the back, Bukayo Saka in attack & Jude Bellingham bossing it: How England could line up for Euro 2028 as the Three Lions go for glory on home soil

After a 32-year absence, men's football will finally come home in 2028 (or, more specifically, to England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). The British Isles have been confirmed as hosts of the European Championship in five years' time - meaning it will be the first major men's tournament held in this part of the world since Euro 1996.

Anticipation is already building and the question has, of course, been raised: What will the host nations look like five years down the line?

Barring the emergence of a golden generation for one of their co-hosts, England will have to shoulder the majority of expectation as they look to claim an elusive piece of silverware on home soil. Indeed, they may even be considered favourites.

With that in mind, just how will the Three Lions line up in 2028?

  • Aaron Ramsdale England 2023Getty

    GK: Aaron Ramsdale

With Jordan Pickford likely out of the picture, Ramsdale should finally be able to make the No.1 spot his own.

Although David Raya has put a spanner in the works at Arsenal, if Ramsdale is still playing for a Champions League club in 2028, then he will be the favourite to start, although impressive youngster James Trafford will have something to say on the matter.

  • Reece James England 2022Getty Images

    RB: Reece James

After only making one appearance at Euro 2020 and missing out on the 2022 World Cup altogether, James will be absolutely determined to play a role in a major tournament on home soil.

So much will depend on his fitness, though, with his chronic injury problems costing him his place in Qatar last year. Trent Alexander-Arnold will only be 30 in 2028, while there are plenty of other developing right-backs who will push James all the way for a starting spot.

  • Ben White England 2022-23Getty Images

    CB: Ben White

England's forgotten man could well be back in the picture by the time this tournament rolls around. White has excelled as a right-back for Arsenal, but by 2028 he would surely hope to be playing in his preferred centre-back role.

As is the case in a number of areas, England are not blessed with a host of emerging talent in this position, but if White is still operating at the highest level for a top-six club, then his chances of beating Fikayo Tomori and Man City youngster Taylor Harwood-Bellis to a starting berth are strong.

  • Levi Colwill England 2023Getty Images

    CB: Levi Colwill

One young centre-back who the Three Lions will have hihh hopes for is Colwill. He will be 25 by the time the tournament begins, meaning he won't even have reached his peak. Quality left-footed central defenders are like gold dust, but it feels as though England have the man custom-built for the role in the future.

Fellow Chelsea academy graduate Marc Guehi will likely be a squad option, but Colwill will expect to start.

  • Rico Lewis England 2023Getty

    LB: Rico Lewis

Left-back looks like a future problem area for the Three Lions, but in Lewis they have a more-than satisfactory solution. Nominally a right-back, the versatile Man City youngster seems destined to be an England international for years to come.

He's comfortable on the left and is already adept at playing as an inverted full-back, should the manager choose to deploy that tactical set-up. Granted, Ben Chilwell will be only 31 in 2028, but Lewis should command a starting place.

  • Declan Rice England 2022Getty Images

    DM: Declan Rice

Rice will hope to be at the peak of his powers with an overflowing trophy cabinet when he steps out at Euro 2028 - potentially as England captain.

While the likes of Conor Gallagher and Kalvin Phillips might still be in and around the squad, there doesn't seem to be any indication that Rice will relinquish his grasp of the defensive midfield role anytime soon - especially after comfortably making the step up in class at Arsenal.

  • Jude Bellingham England ScotlandGetty

    CM: Jude Bellingham

The star man, the difference-maker. If Bellingham is performing at anything close to the level he has demonstrated in the early days of his time at Real Madrid, then he will be a serious problem at Euro 2028.

A generational talent, fitness issues and shouldering the weight of expectation that accompanies any tournament - let alone a home one - are the main challenges he will have to overcome, but he has already demonstrated at the 2022 World Cup that he was built for the biggest stage.

  • Ebereche Eze England 2023Getty

    CM: Eberechi Eze

A more defensive-minded manager might turn to the likes of Gallagher or Jacob Ramsey for the third midfield role, but Eze is a creative machine who can do both. The Crystal Palace star is on the fringes of the team in 2023, but he may well have moved on to bigger and better things by the time the home tournament rolls around.

He should be at his peak to complete an exciting central trio. Cole Palmer will be breathing down his neck as another attacking option, though.

  • Bukayo Saka England North Macedonia 2

    RW: Bukayo Saka

In five years' time, Arsenal sensation Saka may well be England's star attacking player, and he'll be a shoo-in to start on the right wing.

He'll still be just 27 years old, and it would be little surprise to see him plying his trade for the likes of Real Madrid or Barcelona - if his beloved Gunners haven't kept themselves at European football's top table following their recent resurgence.

  • Marcus Rashford England 2022Getty Images

    ST: Marcus Rashford

One area of genuine concern for the FA over the next few years will be the centre-forward position and who will succeed record goal-scorer Harry Kane, who will be hell-bent on being involved but will turn 35 shortly after the conclusion of the tournament.

They will be hoping for a similarly meteoric emergence from youngsters Liam Delap or Dane Scarlett, but - failing that - a 30-year-old Rashford may well be the most reliable source of goals up top.

  • Phil Foden England 2022-23Getty

    LW: Phil Foden

Barring a remarkable turnaround for Man Utd outcast Jadon Sancho, Foden will still be deployed as a left winger for England in 2028.

His involvement provides tactical flexibility, and he could well drift centrally with the likes of Eze or Palmer in the team to positionally rotate with. So much is expected of Foden, and he will hope to make his mark in the prime of his career.
