Ahead of Mexico’s Gold Cup opener against the Dominican Republic at SoFi Stadium, head coach Javier El Vasco Aguirre expressed a heartfelt message to the Mexican fan base in the United States: he wants them to feel seen and represented by the national team on the pitch.
During pre-match press conference, Aguirre addressed the emotional connection between the players and the fans, especially those living in Los Angeles, a city with a large and deeply rooted Mexican community. Although the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) made it clear at the start of the briefing that political topics were off-limits to avoid controversy, Aguirre still touched on themes of identity and belonging.
“Since the very beginning, during the Nations League, I’ve said it - I want the fans who come to the stadium to feel like they’re watching themselves out there. We want Mexicans to feel represented. Regardless of the result or the circumstances, I want them to leave feeling proud and saying, ‘We lost, but I’m proud of these guys. They fight, they hustle, they work hard - just like me.’ I want this team to bring joy to people and for fans to feel connected to what we do on the field,” Aguirre said.
