Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay and 10 of the best free agents still available as the summer transfer window slams shut

This summer, the Professional Footballers Association launched an intuitive scheme: a summer training camp for players who found themselves without a contract. Ran over 10 weeks, the free agents even took place in several trial games against lower-league clubs, with the PFA XI most recently meeting with Cambridge United at the end of August.

Ex-Premier League stars Ciaran Clarke, Dwight Gayle and Ravel Morrison were among those involved in the scheme, which has been widely praised by players and the media. It was successful too, with a decent crop of PFA members being snapped up by clubs after the showcase.

Other players have not been quite as lucky, though. Indeed, once again this summer, a host of players who would likely see themselves as above playing in these sort of trial games remain unemployed as we enter the autumn months.

There is still time for these free agents to secure a contract as clubs who could not get all of their business done before deadline day look to plug holes in their squads. Below, GOAL has taken a look at some of the best-known talent who could still be snapped up for nothing over the coming weeks.

    Adrien Rabiot

French football's enfant terrible was one of Juventus' better players over the past two seasons. However, as has often been the case during Rabiot's career, problems emerged when it came to renewing his contract. His agent and mother Veronique reportedly demanded that her son be made Juve's highest earner if he was to remain in Turin. The club, probably rightly, refused to play ball, with the Rabiots opting to try their luck in free agency.

Manchester United and Liverpool have both been linked at points, as have AC Milan, but an agreement has not been forthcoming. Whoever does sign Rabiot will be getting a solid midfielder, but he comes with a sizeable amount of baggage.

    Mats Hummels

Hummels was robbed of a dream ending to his Borussia Dortmund career as he and his boyhood side were bested in the Champions League final by Real Madrid at Wembley in May. In the lead up to that game, the centre-back had openly criticised head coach Edin Terzic and BVB have kicked-off the new season with neither man at the club.

Terzic has yet to find new employment, and neither has Hummels. Premier League side Brighton were initially believed to be keen, with Bologna in the running too, but the German failed to commit to either club. There could be options in La Liga too, in the form of Mallorca and Real Sociedad, while Roma are also said to be keen on perhaps the best defender in last season's Champions League.

    Anthony Martial

For some years, Martial was a decisive figure at Manchester United. But by the time his Old Trafford exit was finally confirmed this summer, it was hard to find many supporters who had any patience left for the Frenchman. Perpetually injured, Martial scarcely contributed on any meaningful level after the 2019-20 season, with a loan move to Sevilla failing to reignite his career.

Since his departure, it's been a surprisingly quiet summer for Martial. Some French clubs were said to be circling back in May, but these rumours never amounted to anything concrete. If he is to return to the game, he'll no doubt have to swallow a sizable wage cut, having been on a reported £250,000 per week during his time in Manchester.

    Memphis Depay

Memphis has always been consistently inconsistent and he endured one of his frequent down years at Atletico Madrid last season. His performances for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 weren't much better, either.

The forward has been keeping himself in shape over the summer at least, after he and Atleti tore up his contract, but his availability has not sparked a bidding war. Nice and Rayo Vallecano - hardly elite clubs - are the latest to be linked as Memphis looks to get back to something resembling his best.

    Andre Gomes

On the rare occasions he got on the pitch for Everton last season, Gomes felt like a relic. One of the only remaining survivors of the Toffees' big-spending era, a range of factors prevented the former Barcelona man from showing his best stuff at Goodison Park, and he is now searching for his next challenge.

It's tough to see a top-level club take a punt on Gomes, with a slow retirement in MLS looking like his best bet heading into September.

    Joel Matip

Matip will always be fondly remembered for his contributions to Liverpool's modern success, with the defender winning every honour available to him, except the Europa League, during his time at Anfield. But after missing the lions share of last season with an ACL injury, it was little surprise when the club opted to move on from him this summer.

His recurrent fitness problems are said to have put a lot of prospective suitors off so far, but there is still plenty of time for Matip to find his next challenge should the 33-year-old wish to extend his excellent career.

  • Dele Alli EvertonGetty

    Dele Alli

Technically, Dele is a free agent. Although Everton have permitted the midfielder to continue training with them, he is not under contract at Goodison, with his previous deal expiring in June. Sean Dyche is reportedly open to offering Dele year-long terms, though he will still need to prove his fitness to the Toffees boss, having not played a competitive match since February 2023.

There's little doubt that there's hunger in his belly at least. The ex-Tottenham favourite even targeted a return to the England squad in time for the 2026 World Cup during an appearance as a pundit on Sky Sports last April.

  • Brandon Williams Ipswich Man UtdGetty

    Brandon Williams

Williams differs from the majority of names on this list in that he still has the bulk of his playing days ahead of him. The Manchester-born defender was one of a glut of youth-team graduates handed their debut during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time in charge, but he never pushed on at Old Trafford.

The full-back is now clubless, following his release at the end of the campaign. The fact he has failed to find a new side is surprising, considering his age and experience in both the Championship and Premier League while on loan. It's surely only a matter of time before a second-tier club takes a chance on him.

    Sergio Ramos

After an eventful and emotional return to his boyhood club Sevilla last season, Ramos is back on the market. And despite now being 38, he has shown no indication that he's ready to hang up his boots.

For a long while, it appeared that the Real Madrid legend would be linking up with MLS expansion side San Diego FC. But with no deal confirmed as of yet, and with his prospective new employers not scheduled to play their first game until next year, Ramos may still opt for somewhere else.

  • Eric Maxim Choupo Moting FC Bayern 2024Getty Images

    Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting

When Choupo-Moting departed Stoke City in 2018, he may have feared that his chances of performing on the biggest stages were over. In fact, he went on to earn contracts at both Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich - collecting a string of trophies along the way.

His latest adventure in Bavaria came to an end in June, however, with Manchester United one of the big clubs who were reportedly tempted into signing this effective gun for hire. Their interest has since gone cold, though there have been some quiet rumblings that Inter might be willing to offer him a short-term deal.
