  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Lineker is heading towards the end of his time with Match of the Day after over 20 years on the programme. The former England striker will stop presenting the iconic show at the end of the season and will leave the BBC after hosting the 2026 World Cup. Match of the Day could therefore be set for a brand new look as BBC executives are "warm" to using a "revolving cast" of presenters in the future instead of signing a direct replacement for Lineker, according to The Telegraph.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

A host of names have already emerged as potential replacements for the ex-England star. Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, Micah Richards, Laura Woods and Alan Shearer are all possible options and it is now thought that a "rotating" team of presenters may be used going forwards to freshen up the format.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

Chapman has been tipped as the best man for the job by pundit Danny Murphy. He told talkSPORT: "I feel that they’ve got [a candidate]. Mark Chapman, who I work with a lot on Sundays. I think he’s a brilliant presenter and very, very knowledgeable on sport and football. Somebody who is ready-made for it. Whether he wants it or not, I don’t know. That’s a different question, you’d have to ask him. But he would be the glaring, obvious choice for me."

    WHAT NEXT

Chapman is the regular host of Match of the Day 2 and will continue in that role as Lineker sees out the season. In the meantime the BBC will continue to look at options to host their flagship football programme, but fans will have to wait and see who takes over from Lineker in the hot-seat next season.
