  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Wirtz is set to join Premier League champions Liverpool in a blockbuster £116 million ($159m) summer transfer. The Reds have beaten off competition from Manchester City and Bayern Munich to land the Germany star in what is a massive statement of intent from Arne Slot's side.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Slot reportedly held a 'secret meeting' with Wirtz in a bid to convince him to make the switch to Anfield. Yet the Germany international may not have needed much convincing. Rudi Voller, the German Football Association's sporting director, says Wirtz dropped a big hint over his next move some time ago.

  • WHAT VOLLER SAID

Voller told Toni Kroos' podcast 'Einfach Mal Luppen': "A few months ago, he hinted to me, as did his father, that he was inclined to go to Liverpool."

Wirtz is due to have a medical at Liverpool and complete his move on Friday, with an official announcement to follow. Fans will then be able to catch a glimpse of him in action for the Reds for the first time when they head to Asia in July for a pre-season tour.
