Newcastle United Vs Liverpool Preview

Neither Newcastle United nor Liverpool have finished their summer transfer business, but meet at St James’ Park on their season’s opening day.

The two sides met at the same venue in last season’s second matchweek, with Liverpool winning 3-2 thanks to a late Rio Ngumoha goal.

During that game, Liverpool were largely unconvincing, but Ngumoha’s strike offered optimism for the future.

The teenager impressed throughout last season, but only added one more goal in his next 18 Premier League appearances.

This season, Ngumoha, along with Alexander Isak, Victor Munoz, and any further additions, will be tasked with taking the Reds’ attack into a new era without Mohamed Salah.

With Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones also departing the club this summer, many of the players who delivered success under Jurgen Klopp have now moved on.

Andoni Iraola, who has taken over from Arne Slot, will attempt to deliver a high-pressing style reminiscent of Klopp’s teams.

How easily they’re able to do that at St James’ Park, with Newcastle also entering a new era, remains to be seen.

Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League last season, with Eddie Howe eventually stepping down as boss.

Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes were pivotal to Newcastle’s earlier success under Howe and have also left the club.

Former RB Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle has replaced Howe in the dugout, while the Tyneside club have made five signings, including Lukas Hornicek, Amar Dedic, and Aladji Bamba.

The atmosphere will be ferocious, particularly given the return of former forward Isak, but Newcastle’s record against Liverpool is torrid.

Newcastle have lost 14 games and drawn five since they last beat Liverpool in the Premier League.

Despite the uncertainty around both sides, Betfred does not expect that trend to change, offering odds of 13/5 on Newcastle to win (3.60), while Liverpool can be backed at 9/10 (1.90).
