However, Jannik Sinner would avenge his defeat in the clay grand slam and dethrone King Carlos in London. Despite claiming his first-ever Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022, Alcaraz hasn’t reached a New York final since and was even sent packing in Round 2 by Botic van de Zandschulp last year, which is the Spaniard’s joint-worst career performance in a Slam.

Djokovic has won a record-breaking 24 Grand Slams during his amazing career, with four of those titles coming in New York. While his regular career rivals, such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray, have hung up their racquets, the Serb’s quest for further success continues. However, 2024 proved to be the first year since 2017 that Djokovic failed to claim one of the major crowns, and he hasn’t tasted Grand Slam success since the 2023 US Open. Djokovic may have underperformed by his previous high standards of late, but the fact that he’s reached the semi-finals at each of the 2025 Grand Slams so far shows that those who write him off do so at their peril.

Three years before that defeat, A-Rod had been the darling of the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, after beating Carlos Alcaraz’s current coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, to claim the crown. After early exits from the Australian Open and French Open, Fritz roared back to form, reaching the semis at Wimbledon, and will be hopeful of a long stretch at his home Slam once again.

Aryna Sabalenka likes to go deep when it matters most. Her Slam-final streak may have come to an end at Wimbledon, but she still reached the semis even then. Further study also reveals that the WTA’s top-ranked player has reached the second week/quarter finals at her previous eleven straight Grand Slams, a run that stretches back to the 2022 US Open. The Minsk-born star will be desperate to reclaim her crown in the season-ending Slam after having to settle for the runners-up spot in Melbourne and Paris. Otherwise, it will be the first time since 2022 that she hasn’t secured one of the major titles during a calendar year.

Last year ended on a low note for Swiatek after she pulled out of several events, following the termination of her highly successful coaching partnership with Tomasz Wiktorowski. However, the Pole seems to have put that behind her now, and after reaching at least the last four of all the previous Slams this year, she’ll be confident of another lengthy run in the States.

Gauff, who amazingly is still just 21 years young, will be more confident on a hard surface in front of an adoring home crowd and looks to have the best chance of the United States women taking part. Having never reached the second week in New York before, it’s hard to see her battling for honours come the business end of proceedings during the first week of September.
