The Premier League season kicks off next weekend, and Liverpool start their campaign against Fulham on the road next Saturday. City begin their term against West Ham away next Sunday.
Liverpool edge out Manchester City by a 3-1 margin to win the Community Shield at the King Power Stadium. Trent Alexander-Arnold fired the Reds in front with a fine finish before Julian Alvarez answered on his City debut after a VAR check. Mohamed Salah restored Liverpool's advantage from the penalty spot following a handball in the box by Ruben Dias. Darwin Nunez then sealed the victory for Jurgen Klopp's men with a close-range header in stoppage time to open his account for the Reds.

HAALAND MISSES A SITTER! Haaland should get off the mark for City as he latches on to a rebound when Foden's strike is stopped by Adrian. However, his first-time left-footed strike clips the top of the bar and goes over. It has not been his day and a complete contrast in fortunes between the two new forwards for City and Liverpool.

Robertson does well at the back post to guide Salah's cross into the path of the forward. Nunez is on the spot six yards out and nods the ball past Ederson into the net. The perfect start for Liverpool's new signing.

Haaland has the ball in the back of the Liverpool net, but his celebrations are short-lived as it went out of play for a goal-kick before he converted from Foden's backheel.

Carvalho comes on for his Liverpool bow to replace Diaz in the final third.
Salah has been directly involved in 13 goals for Liverpool against Manchester City (8 goals, 5 assists), his most against a single side for the Reds. His eight goals since 2017-18 is the most any player has scored against City in this time.
CHANCE! Robertson has the chance to end the game with a quick break at the City defence. He has team-mates in support but opts for a strike at goal and blasts his attempt over.
WIDE! Nunez rises highest in the City box to attack a cross from the right flank from Milner, but he angles his effort just wide of the left post.
Keita makes a late run into the City box and is teed up by Elliott to fire at goal, but Ake gets across to block his effort out for a corner.
Keita comes on for the closing stages of the game to replace Thiago.
GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! SALAH CONVERTS!!!!!!!! 2-1 LIVERPOOL!!!!! Liverpool regain the lead through a crisp strike from the penalty spot by the Egypt international. Salah fires low and hard on his left foot into the bottom-right corner, finding the net despite Ederson guessing correctly with his dive.
Dias protests too much to the referee about the decision and goes into the book.
PENALTY TO LIVERPOOL! The referee overturns his decision as Dias does handle the ball from Nunez's header, blocking it on its way to goal. It was clear and obvious and the penalty has been confirmed.
PENALTY SHOUT! Nunez rises to connect with Salah's cross from the right flank, but his header is blocked by Dias. Liverpool are convinced that it was handball, but the referee does not give the spot-kick on the field.
Adrian is looking a tad suspect between the sticks with his kicking. He makes another hash of a clearance down the field.
City have found their rhythm as Foden and Alvarez have offered a lot more than Grealish and Mahrez.
Alvarez is the third Argentinian to score in the Community Shield, after Sergio Aguero (x2) and Carlos Tevez, with all three players netting for Manchester City.
Alexander-Arnold comes off and is replaced at right-back by Milner.
Elliott comes on to replace Henderson in the Liverpool midfield.

De Bruyne makes way for City in the middle of the park as Gundogan enters the fold.
GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! ALVAREZ LEVELS FOR CITY!!!!! 1-1!!!!!! After a VAR check, Alvarez gets off the mark for City with a close-range finish. Foden latches on to a cross from De Bruyne and steers a strike towards goal. Adrian saves the effort, but fails to gather the rebound as Foden reacts first. He knocks it away from the Liverpool keeper before Alvarez pounces and sweeps an effort into the back of the net.
City have the ball in the net, but it will be checked by VAR.
Cancelo whips a low cross into the box that strikes Matip, which City feel was on the arm. The referee does not give it on the field, and Liverpool then counter. Diaz tries to surge past Ake but is halted by a good challenge. End-to-end action.
Adrian has a flap at a cross from Walker from the right flank, punching it away before having to hurry to clear. He slices his kick into touch to allow City to pen Liverpool deep.
Both teams have scored in eight of the last nine meetings between City and Liverpool in all competitions, including each of the last five in a row. In the three games between the sides last season, both teams scored at least twice each time (2-2, 2-2, 3-2).
CHANCE! Nunez has the chance to get off the mark for Liverpool as he wins the ball and then combines with Henderson in the final third. However, Ederson gets out quickly and makes a vital save with his face to deny the forward.
Diaz gets back to do his defensive duties, heading De Bruyne's cross-field pass away from Walker in space. Liverpool are doing all the little things better than City.
Nunez goes down in the box chasing a ball over the top amid contact from Ederson, but the flag is up for offside. That may have been a penalty had the flag remained down.
Nunez enters the fold to make his Liverpool debut, replacing Firmino in the final third.
Alvarez makes his bow for City in competitive action to replace Mahrez.
Grealish makes way for Foden in the final third after an unconvincing display.
Fabinho drives at the City defence and offloads to Diaz in space, but his strike is blocked by Dias covering to his right.
Salah probes down the right and is allowed to find Alexander-Arnold in space by the City defence. The full-back cuts back on his left foot to shoot, but sees his effort charged down by Ake.
Cancelo and De Bruyne work a one-two down the left flank that forces Robertson to deflect a low cross from the Belgian behind for a corner.
City survive a series of crosses from the Reds from both left and right flanks after Diaz is brought down by Silva to earn a free-kick.
SAVE! Mahrez forces a save from Adrian. The forward latches on to a clip over the top from Rodri and cuts inside on his left foot. He fires his attempt into the ground, which takes the pace off the strike, but it still requires a good stop from the Liverpool keeper.

Haaland struggled to get up to the speed of the game in the first half and lacked a clinical edge when he was presented with two opportunities. Pep Guardiola will be looking for an improvement from his team to avoid a defeat in the curtain-raiser.
Liverpool hold a 1-0 lead over Manchester City at the break in their Community Shield clash. Trent Alexander-Arnold fired the Reds in front in the 21st minute with a fine finish after being teed up by Mohamed Salah. It was no more than the Reds deserved for their performance, with City struggling to play themselves into the game outside of two half-chances for Erling Haaland.

De Bruyne works an offload down the right flank for Rodri, who twists to fire at goal from a tight angle, but Adrian gets down to make a comfortable stop.
Mahrez cuts inside from the right flank and into the Liverpool box before going down under pressure from Thiago. The referee tells the winger to get to his feet as the contact was minimal.
Grealish makes a bright run into the box and offloads for Haaland in space, but the forward takes a poor first touch and loses possession.
Haaland works an offload for Mahrez to line up a strike on the edge of the box on his right foot, but his effort is blocked by the legs of Fabinho.
Cancelo bursts down the left flank away from Henderson and sends a low delivery into the box. Van Dijk reacts ahead of Haaland at the near post to clear the danger.
Haaland has his first sniff of goal of the campaign, but fails to make it count. He will be desperate for a debut goal to ease the pressure on himself.
CHANCES FOR HAALAND! The forward latches on to a cross from Silva and fend off Robertson to fire at goal off balance. Adrian does well to react to make a fine stop, but City recycle possession to keep the pressure on. Silva angles a second cross into the box for Haaland to attack, but he stretches out with his left foot and slices his attempt before Mahrez sends a header straight at Adrian.
City are second to every ball at the moment. Liverpool are in control and lookg dangerous in the final third.
OFFSIDE! Mahrez latches on to a long ball over the top from Ake and hammers a strike at goal that Adrian has to turn over the bar. However, the flag goes up late for offside against the forward.
Ten of Alexander-Arnold's 13 goals for Liverpool in all competitions have been scored from outside the box (77%). Since his club debut in October 2016, only Salah (11) has scored more goals for the Reds from outside the box.
CHANCE! Liverpool have space on the break through Henderson and he clips a pass towards Diaz through the middle. The forward has to check back before finding Firmino in the City box. He tries to find room for a shot amid pressure from Walker, but he fires his effort wide of the target.
WIDE! Mahrez feeds Haaland in the inside-right channel and he has time to fire at goal on his right foot, only to hit the side-netting with his attempt.
Haaland has a rare touch in the Liverpool box, but he gets closed down by Van Dijk before he can find space for a strike.
Salah does well down the right flank to collect Thiago's pass before teeing up Alexander-Arnold.
GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SCORES A BEAUTY!!!!! 1-0 LIVERPOOL!!!!!!! The Reds take a deserved lead through a fine strike from Alexander-Arnold. Thiago starts the move with a perfect switch from left to right for Salah. The forward offloads to Alexander-Arnold on the edge of the box and he curls his strike away from Ederson into the back of the net with the aid of the left post, and perhaps a slight touch off Ake.
Ederson has to be alert in the City box to tip Henderson's dangerous cross away from the lurking presence of Diaz. It would have been a tap-in for the forward had Ederson not acted.
City are attempting to build their possession game, but it's not quite in rhythm yet. Guardiola is not overly satisifed on the sideline at the moment.
CHANCE! Alexander-Arnold works a dangerous cross to the back post for Robertson to attack, but he goes for goal for his header rather than nodding across the face, and misses the target.
Liverpool have edged the early stages of the game, but there are signs that City are beginning to settle down after a frenetic start.
Ake rises to connect with a cross from De Bruyne to the back post, but he can harmlessly glance his attempt wide of the target.
WIDE! De Bruyne pounces a loose ball in the final third and looks for a strike on his left foot that is deflected behind by Van Dijk into the side-netting.
Salah is released over the top by Robertson from a quick free-kick. The forward gets the better of Cancelo, but Ake gets there to dispossess Salah before he can shoot.
WIDE! Salah collects on the right flank and beats Cancelo with ease. He fires hard at goal on his left foot towards the near post, but only finds the side-netting.
BLOCK! Henderson squeezes a cross into the box from the right flank that is blocked into the path of Diaz. He shoots first-time, but Dias gets across to divert it behind.
Salah swings a cross into the City box that is cleared as far as Thiago on the edge of the box, but he sees his effort charged down by Ake.

Guardiola hands a debut to Haaland in the final third to spearhead the attack alongside Grealish and Mahrez, who are preferred to Foden. Ake gets the nod to start alongside Dias in the backline amid the absence of Aymeric Laporte due to injury.
Liverpool are without both Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher for the Community Shield due to injury which presses Adrian between the posts. Davies is the back-up option on the bench for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp is also without Diogo Jota with a muscle injury, limiting his options in the final third. Salah and Diaz are joined by Firmino in a front three, with Nunez available off the bench.

City return after their Premier League triumph from last season and Pep Guardiola's men will be seeking to reaffirm their dominance of English football. They bolstered their forward line with the signing of Erling Haaland, while Kalvin Phillips was also acquired to strengthen the middle of the park. City have done their fair share of balancing the books too, allowing Raheem Sterling to leave the club along with Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko. It will be interesting to see how the new players blend into the City side.
Liverpool return to competitive action for the first time since their defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champions League final. The Reds will be determined to set down a marker for the rest of the season against their Premier League title rivals City after narrowly missing out last term. Liverpool refreshed their forward line in the summer, allowing Sadio Mane to leave and signing Darwin Nunez, who will be looking to make an impact from the off for the Reds.
