Wrexham in the Premier League? Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney sent 'furthest will get' warning after enjoying back-to-back promotions

Back-to-back promotions have carried the Red Dragons out of the National League and into League One. Plans are currently being drawn up for life back in the third tier, with Hollywood co-owners set to make more funds available in the next transfer window.

The ultimate goal is to make the Welsh side a top-flight outfit, with it accepted that progress will slow at some stage in pursuit of that target. Jermaine Pennant knows all about life at the highest level, having represented the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, and is not convinced that Wrexham will complete their epic journey.

The Champions League finalist has ruled himself out of any return to professional football at the Racecourse, as he is now 41 years of age, and has told Football League World: "I’ve just come back from the Asia tour for Liverpool and we had three games in 12 days and I couldn’t walk after the third one. So I don’t think you’ll see me playing in 46 games a season unless I really conditioned my body! So you know, I’ll just stick to my exhibition games. The Premier League might be a long shot for Wrexham, but saying that, look at Luton being in the Premier League from non-league, so it’s possible. I think the chances are slim but never say never, I think the furthest they will get is the Championship."

Wrexham are being tipped to push for a place in the second tier when Phil Parkinson returns his side to competitive action in 2024-25, but they can no longer outspend domestic rivals. Reynolds and McElhenney have, however, admitted that further investment will be sought at some stage in a bid to reach the promised land.
