Southampton most expensive player sales - How Saints made over £550 million in outgoing transfers

Southampton are renowned for their top-class youth academy and also have one of the best scouting teams in the Premier League.

Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott are arguably their most famous academy graduates, with both enjoying successful careers at the highest level.

But the Saints have also consistently managed to bring in some of the greatest prospects in the game, only to help them take their game to the next level and then sell at a healthy profit.

Liverpool in particular love a Southampton player!

In recent years, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Danny Ings and Dejan Lovren all swapped Southampton in favour of a move to Anfield.

Who were their best outgoing deals, though, and which players earned them the most money?

After 72 appearances for the Saints, Leicester City came calling in the summer of 2021, paying £15.84m for his signature.

After graduating from Crystal Palace's youth academy, Clyne joined Southampton in the summer of 2012, the season when the Saints were newly promoted to the Premier League.

After over 90 appearances in three years at the club, which saw him help Southampton to their highest ever finish in the Premier League, Clyne joined Liverpool for £15.93 million in the summer of 2015.

The right-back made 77 appearances for the Reds, before returning to his boyhood club Crystal Palace in 2020.

After joining Southampton's academy as a seven-year-old kid, Chambers rose through the ranks at the club and made his full debut in the 2012-13 season in a 4-1 win over Stevenage.

In July 2013, Chambers signed a new four-year deal at Southampton and made his Premier League debut later in August.

Arsenal made a move for him just a year later, signing him for £18.21 million.

    7Dejan Lovren | £22.77m | Liverpool | 2014

After impressing at Lyon, Southampton signed Dejan Lovren for £9 million in the summer of 2013.

The Croatian scored his first goal for Southampton against his future team Liverpool at Anfield in September 2013.

Lovren also came up with an assist for Southampton in a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford later that season.

The centre-back was then pursued by Liverpool in the summer of 2014 and the Reds signed him for £22.77m, making him the most expensive defender in the club's history until Van Dijk arrived in 2017.

  • Danny Ings Southampton Premier League 2018-19Getty

    6Danny Ings | £26.48m | Aston Villa | 2021

Ings came to prominence during his spell with Burnley, where he scored 38 goals in four seasons at Turf Moor between 2011 and 2015.

His performances were so good that Liverpool came calling, paying £7.47 million for his services in the summer of 2015.

However, Ings could not replicate his goal-scoring form for the Reds and it looked like the move came too early in his career.

After three years at the club, he left on loan to Southampton before the Saints signed him for £22.59m in the summer of 2019.

Ings was excellent for Southampton and became just the third player in the club's history to reach the 20-goal mark in the Premier League after Matt Le Tissier and James Beattie.

In 2021, Aston Villa came calling, agreeing to pay a premium £26.48m for the English striker.

    5Adam Lallana | £27.90m | Liverpool | 2014

Another one of Southampton's academy products who joined Liverpool, Lallana was part of the Saints squad that performed so well in the 2012-13 season in the Premier League.

After making 235 appearances for them between 2006 to 2014, Lallana made the move to Anfield in the summer of 2014 for £27.90 million.

In his six years with the Reds, Lallana made 128 appearances, scoring 18 goals before moving to Brighton and Hove Albion in 2020 on a free transfer.

  • Morgan Schneiderlin SouthamptonGetty Images

    4Morgan Schneiderlin | £31.50m | Manchester United | 2015

After intense speculation surrounding his future, Southampton agreed to sell Schneiderlin to Manchester United in the summer of 2015 for a £31.50 million fee.

Four days after signing, Schneiderlin made his unofficial debut for the Red Devils, scoring the only goal in their win against Club America in Seattle on tour.

That wasn't the start of the United career he had hoped for, though, as the Frenchman failed to make the cut and was eventually sold to Everton for £20.70m in January 2017.

  • Luke Shaw Southampton Premier LeagueGetty Images

    3Luke Shaw | £33.75m | Manchester United | 2014

After joining Southampton's academy at the age of seven, Shaw quickly made a name for himself and became a regular in their under-18 team at the tender age of 15.

Shaw made his first start for the senior team in August 2012 and established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League towards the end of the 2013-14 season.

In the summer of 2014, Manchester United came calling, beating off competition from Chelsea and signing Shaw for £33.75 million, making him the most expensive teenager in world football at that time.

Shaw has since gone on to make over 150 appearances for the Red Devils.

  • Sadio Mane SouthamptonGetty Images

    2Sadio Mane | £37.08m | Liverpool | 2016

The top two most expensive transfer sales made by Southampton went to Liverpool.

Starting with Mane, the Senegalese forward stayed with the Saints for two seasons, scoring 21 goals in 67 appearances, including a new Premier League record for the fastest hat-trick.

In the summer of 2016, Mane was subject to interest from both Liverpool and Manchester United and he chose the Reds, who paid a premium £37.08 million fee.

Mane spent six seasons at Liverpool, winning the Champions League, the Premier League, a FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, an FA Cup and an English League Cup.

He left for Bayern Munich for £28.80m in the summer of 2022.

  • TOTW Virgil Van Dijk SouthamptonGetty Images

    1Virgil van Dijk | £76.19m | Liverpool | 2017

In a transfer that was marred with controversy, Liverpool made Van Dijk the most expensive defender on the planet when they agreed to pay Southampton £76.19 million for the Dutchman's signature back in December 2017.

Van Dijk became an instant hit with the Reds and also played a crucial role in their run to the Champions League final in 2018, which they lost to Real Madrid.

In the 2018-19 season, Van Dijk led Liverpool to Champions League glory after all, coming up with incredible performances, especially against Tottenham Hotspur in the final.

After winning the UEFA Player of the Year award in August 2019, Van Dijk led Liverpool to their first Premier League title in the 2019-20 season.

In 2022, the Dutchman helped the Reds to win the FA Cup and League Cup, thus winning every single major trophy with Liverpool as a player.
