Son of Man Utd legend wanted Wrexham manager job! Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney credited with taking Red Dragons to ‘another level’ after handing reins to Phil Parkinson

Ferguson spent eight years at the Racecourse Ground as a player between 1999 and 2007. He started out at Old Trafford, as he made a senior breakthrough under his famous father, but took in over 300 appearances during his time in North Wales – forming part of their Football League Trophy triumph in 2005.

The current Peterborough boss, who is preparing for a reunion with Wrexham in League One, started his coaching badges while with the Red Dragons. He had been hoping to take the reins at some stage, with Hollywood superstars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney now overseeing a stunning sporting project.

Phil Parkinson has masterminded back-to-back promotions for Wrexham, with Ferguson saying when asked for his take on a remarkable story that has been told in front of documentary cameras: “The owners have taken Wrexham to another level. They deserve a lot of credit for that and for sticking with Phil after they weren’t successful in their first season together there. The expectations at Wrexham are now high and taking that into account makes the job Phil has done even more impressive. He’s done a brilliant job and I’m pleased for him and the club as I always had a really good relationship with the fans when I was there. The fanbase has always been there and they are now being rewarded after spending many years outside the Football League.

“I started my coaching badges while I was at Wrexham and it’s no secret I was interested in the manager’s job, but I have no regrets because I came to Peterborough soon afterwards and we have had great times together.”

Ferguson is taking in a fourth stint as Peterborough boss, with four promotions and two EFL Cup wins on his coaching CV. A visit from Wrexham is next on the agenda, with both the Red Dragons and the Posh taking aim at a top-six finish in League One this season.
