Arise, Sir Gareth! Former England boss Southgate given knighthood in King's New Year honours list

Southgate's name has been included in a long list of those who have been recognised by King Charles III in his New Year honours list. The 54-year-old will receive a knighthood and the prestigious title of 'sir' for his services to association football. Southgate served as England boss from 2016 to 2024, reaching the European Championship final twice, as well as a World Cup semi-final.

The Football Association paid tribute to the manager, with chair Debbie Hewitt saying: "On behalf of us all at the Football Association, I congratulate Sir Gareth on this richly-deserved honour. Throughout his career in the game as a player, coach and change-maker, he has embodied the best of English football. One of our greatest-ever managers, Sir Gareth’s remarkable coaching achievements across four major tournaments include two successive EURO finals, equalling our best-ever men’s World Cup performance away from home and being ranked in the world’s top five for more than five years.

"Off the field, he brought our fans closer than ever to the team, stood up for what he believed in and inspired players to share his pride in representing England. It has been a privilege to know the man and the manager. All of us who have experienced his thoughtfulness, dedication and leadership are delighted with this wonderful news."

Southgate guided England into a new era of international football, bringing fans closer to the team in the process. His homely attitude towards the squad allowed journalists and spectators to see a side of football players that many had not been able to uncover previously. On top of that, his achievements on the pitch were not too bad either. The Three Lions never got their hands on a piece of silverware, but they came so close on more than one occassion, creating plenty of memories along the way.

The former England boss has not returned to football yet since stepping down after England's Euro 2024 final loss to Spain. There were rumours that he could make his way back into club management, but Southgate himself has suggested his future may lay away from football altogether.
