Newcastle chasing blockbuster £86m signing as Magpies aim to beat Man Utd and Liverpool to in-demand striker

According to The Telegraph, Ekitike has caught Newcastle's attention with strong performances in the Bundesliga at Eintracht Frankfurt as well as with France’s Under‑21 side. He is also on the radar of other Premier League powerhouses like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea. However, the Magpies are confident of wrapping up the deal and are in communication with his representatives.

Ekitike’s release clause stands at around €100 million (£86 million). Newcastle are aware that if they want to secure the deal, they may need to meet that full valuation. This pursuit is not new: the club previously tried to acquire the French talent twice in 2022, during the January and summer windows. Both attempts failed when Ekitike chose Paris Saint‑Germain instead. He moved to Frankfurt in 2024 after struggling for minutes with PSG, and flourished in Germany’s top flight.

With Alexander Isak likely to carry much of the attacking load, manager Eddie Howe recognises the need for rotation. They have attacking support on both wings: Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes on the left, and newly signed Anthony Elanga alongside Jacob Murphy covering the right flank. However, the striking department lacks depth as William Osula is currently the only senior backup following Callum Wilson’s departure.

Despite targeting a third striker, Newcastle remain committed to Isak, last season’s leading goal scorer. The club has no intention of selling him; his contract holds three years remaining, and they plan to discuss a fresh deal later this summer.

Securing Ekitike would mark a major coup for Newcastle. His youth, hunger, and proven track record make him exactly the kind of dynamic addition Howard wants, capable of both starting roles and impact performances from the bench. With Champions League commitments beckoning, strengthening the striker position is a clear priority, and Ekitike’s signing would represent a significant statement of ambition.
