    WHAT HAPPENED

    Former Italy and Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne returned to Toronto FC's starting XI for their match against the New York Red Bulls on March 22, after previously being kept away from the team. This marked his first competitive action since a brief 10-minute appearance in the 2024 season finale on Oct. 5. The Designated Player, among one of MLS's highest-paid players, has been a polarizing star for the side and was reportedly part of a fractured locker room that led to former head coach Bob Bradley’s departure.

    Prior to the start of the 2025 MLS season, reports had indicated that Lorenzo Insigne wasn’t a part of Toronto FC’s plans for the season. So much so, that the club attempted to sell the Italian with interest from Spain, Turkey, and a few other European sides but Insigne reportedly rejected a move away.

    WHAT’S NEXT?

    Despite Insigne’s presence, Toronto FC fell 2-1 to the New York Red Bulls although the Italian did provide the assist for Deandre Kerr’s 70th minute opener. The loss has dropped TFC to the bottom of the Eastern Conference with the worst goal differential across both conferences. They face Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps next on March 29 at the BMO Field before going on the road to face Inter Miami on April 6.
