    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern had earlier proposed a lucrative renewal deal worth approximately €13 million per year until 2029, but the 23-year-old reportedly rejected the offer in March. However, talks have restarted between the club and his agent in recent weeks which makes Bayern optimistic about keeping their prized defender. Club insiders believe Davies feels at home in Munich, where he has spent nearly seven years and is highly regarded by teammates. Still, the clock is ticking, and if no agreement is reached by January 1, the player will be eligible to negotiate with other clubs.

  • WHICH CLUBS ARE PURSUING DAVIES?

Real Madrid emerged as a strong contender earlier this year, reportedly reaching a preliminary understanding with Davies’ representatives in February. Speculation was rife that the Canadian would either move to Madrid in 2023 for a fee or join as a free agent in 2024 with a lucrative signing-on bonus. However, Madrid’s interest cooled in the following months. The Spanish giants resumed contact with Davies’ camp only after clinching the Champions League title in June. Even so, their failure to present Bayern with a formal offer over the summer left the player questioning the sincerity of their intentions. While there have been sporadic talks this season, no substantial progress has been made.

Barcelona have also expressed interest in Davies, but their financial struggles cast doubt on their ability to make a competitive offer.

In the Premier League, United and Liverpool have both been linked with Davies. However, United’s turbulent state and lack of Champions League football make them less appealing to the Canadian international. Additionally, United’s tight budget has made signing Davies a low priority, especially considering the high wages he would command, even as a free agent.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have shown interest in the Bayern left-back, with the report suggesting Anfield could be a potential destination. However, Liverpool’s senior management has strongly denied pursuing a deal, making a move to the Merseyside club appear "unlikely".

    WHAT NEXT FOR DAVIES?

As the January transfer window approaches, the uncertainty surrounding Davies’ future continues. He knows the extent of Bayern’s commitment to keeping him, but whether he opts to stay in Munich or seek new challenges abroad remains to be seen. A resolution is anticipated by February, although his ultimate decision could shift as negotiations with Bayern and other interested parties evolve.
