Liverpool Player Ratings 22-23 GFXGOAL

Liverpool ratings: Every Reds player's performance in the 2022-23 season - ranked

Jurgen Klopp says he is glad to see the back of 2022-23, and he isn't the only one. For Liverpool, it was a campaign full of disappointment and frustration, one which ended with them failing to achieve even the 'bare minimum' of Champions League qualification.

A fifth-placed finish represents success to some clubs, but not this one. There will be big changes at Anfield this summer, and rightly so, as Klopp's squad gets the overhaul it probably needed 12 months ago. We know some of the players who will leave, and others will rightly be looking over their shoulder, but who has done enough to be part of the new-look Reds next season?

Here, GOAL ranks each and every member of Klopp's senior squad from the past season...

  • Arthur Melo Liverpool 2022Getty

    28Arthur Melo (N/A)

Farewell, then, Arthur. We barely even got to know you. The Brazilian's Liverpool career amounted to just 13 minutes of senior football, plus a few run-outs for the Under-21s.

Not his fault, of course. The thigh injury suffered in training in the autumn ruined the 26-year-old's chances of establishing himself, but even when he was fit towards the end of the campaign, Klopp declined to use him. A strange signing by Liverpool, one which can safely be filed in the drawer marked 'panic loans'.

  • Naby Keita Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    27Naby Keita - 3/10

He was once one of the hottest prospects in European football, a signing viewed by Liverpool fans as a real game-changer. But Keita's Reds career will finish this summer, and it will be a story of injuries and frustration as much as anything else.

He leaves Anfield on a free transfer, and does so with well-wishes from everyone inside the club. But the Guinea international's last season on Merseyside summed up his five years, really. He spent much of it injured, and the last of his 129 appearances for the club, at Crystal Palace back in February, saw him substituted at half-time.

  • Oxlade-Chamberlain(C)Getty Images

    26Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 3/10

Another player departing for pastures new this summer is Oxlade-Chamberlain, who like Keita has seen his Reds career decimated by injury. The former England international started this season injured and made only 13 appearances in total.

He did, at least, manage to get on the scoresheet once, albeit in a dire defeat at Brentford in January. His last two outings came, somewhat bizarrely, as a substitute away to Real Madrid and Manchester City.

  • Calvin Ramsay Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    25Calvin Ramsay - 3/10

A hugely frustrating first season in England for the young Scot, who has seen injury limit him to just two senior outings following his switch from Aberdeen last summer.

Ramsay was signed to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, and there was promise in his one and only start, a Carabao Cup win over Derby County in November, but he needs a good pre-season and a bit more luck if he is to deliver on his promise at Anfield.

  • Joe Gomez Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    24Joe Gomez - 4/10

A pretty dreadful campaign for one of the most popular members of the Reds' first-team squad. Gomez made 31 appearances in all competitions, but rarely looked comfortable and his harrowing night against Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16 first leg stands out a mile.

There are plenty who would sell the 26-year-old this summer, but Klopp has more faith in Gomez than most, and will hope the Londoner's struggles this term were just a blip, rather than anything more long-term.

  • Nat Phillips Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    23Nat Phillips - 4/10

A player who has stayed at Liverpool too long, Phillips expected to depart last summer but didn't, and expected to depart in January, but didn't.

In fairness to the big centre-back, he has never let the Reds down when asked to play, and he performed well in his five appearances this season too. He handled Erling Haaland at the Etihad in the Carabao Cup in December, for example.

The time has most certainly come, though, for the 26-year-old to go and play regular football.

  • Kostas-Tsimikas(C)Getty Images

    22Kostas Tsimikas - 4/10

After a pretty good 2021-22, the Greek has looked far from convincing this season when asked to fill in for Andy Robertson. He delivers a good ball, but his defensive shortcomings are obvious.

Whether he'll be here next season remains to be seen. With Robertson approaching 30, Liverpool need to start thinking about their next starting left-back. It won't be Tsimikas.

  • Fabinho-LiverpoolGetty

    21Fabinho - 4/10

One of the great mysteries of Liverpool's season has been the decline of Fabinho, who has looked a shadow of the dominant, metronomic midfield presence we have become used to.

In fairness to the Brazilian, he has not been helped by what has been in front, behind and alongside him, and he has at least continued to plug away and work at his game. But boy is he a concern for Klopp, heading into an already-big summer.

  • Jordan Henderson Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    20Jordan Henderson - 4/10

If Fabinho's struggles are concerning, then the same can most certainly said for Liverpool's captain, whose form for much of the season has been miles below par. Henderson will turn 33 in June, and there have been clear signs that his energy and physical levels have dropped significantly this season.

He has still had some decent matches and has been a magnificent servant for the club, but his game-time will need to be managed far more carefully going forward.

  • Caoimhin Kelleher Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    19Caoimhin Kelleher - 5/10

Was this the Irishman's last season at Liverpool? Klopp says it would take "an extraordinary offer" to convince the Reds to sell their No.2 goalkeeper this summer, but Kelleher's lack of game-time means he is likely to push for an exit.

The Reds' struggles in the cups meant Kelleher played only four times in all competitions, and he certainly looked rusty in the last of those, on the final day of the league season at Southampton. Mind you, he did manage to fit in some more penalty heroics against Derby in the Carabao Cup back in November.

  • Fabio Carvalho Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    18Fabio Carvalho - 5/10

A bright start but not much thereafter. Carvalho was seen as a super-smart signing when joining from Fulham last summer, and when he scored goals against Bournemouth and, memorably, Newcastle in August, it looked like Liverpool had found themselves a little gem.

But his opportunities dried up after the World Cup. The 20-year-old started only one game in 2023, and appeared only three times off the bench, too. Klopp says he has been impressed, but admits there is a fair chance Carvalho could head out on loan next season.

  • Joel Matip Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    17Joel Matip - 5/10

Another who looks as if he will need replacing pretty soon, Matip was limited to only 21 appearances in all competitions, and his form rarely got near to the heights we saw during the 2021-22 campaign.

There was a winning goal against West Ham, but too many niggles, too many strains and too many mistakes. His performance away at Wolves in February sticks out as a real low point, both for himself and the club.

  • Thiago Alcantara Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    16Thiago Alcantara - 5/10

At his best, the Spain international is one of the best and most glorious midfielders to watch in world football. But Liverpool rarely saw him anywhere near his best this season.

A thigh injury picked up in the first league game of the campaign set the tone, and Thiago finished the season on the sidelines too, a hip issue requiring surgery in the spring. There were moments in between, but generally this was a year to forget for the 32-year-old, and doubts must now exist over his future.

  • Virgil van Dijk Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    15Virgil van Dijk - 5/10

Another player to have fallen short of his usual standard, Van Dijk had a poor start to the season and has looked more vulnerable and uncertain this term than at any point in his Anfield career.

Whether that's a physical thing or a mental thing - or perhaps both - remains to be seen, and in fairness the Dutchman had some fine performances as well as some bad ones, but Liverpool will be desperate to have him back at his best next year.

  • James Milner Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    14James Milner - 6/10

This was the year Liverpool said goodbye to their marathon man. What a servant Milner has been to this football club, and he bowed out in quite fitting fashion really, playing half a game in midfield and half at left-back as the Reds ended their season at Southampton.

He ended up with 42 appearances in all competitions, a testament to his fitness, but his opportunities to start games dried up as the season went on. He will feel it is the right time to move on, and he does so with everyone's blessing.

  • Darwin

    13Darwin Nunez - 6/10

An up-and-down first season in England for the Uruguayan, who misses too many chances but whose ability to get into scoring positions with remarkable regularity offers hope for a long and fulfilling Reds career.

Nunez's red card on his home debut against Crystal Palace in August cost him dear. He still managed to finish the campaign with 15 goals in all competitions, some of them spectacular, but he needs to do more next season if he is to justify his price tag, and the hype surrounding him.

  • Harvey Elliott Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    12Harvey Elliott - 6/10

Only four Liverpool players made more than Elliott's 46 appearances this season, with the England U21 international enjoying a good run in the side, particularly in the early months of the campaign.

The 20-year-old still isn't completely convincing as part of a midfield three, but he certainly has quality on the ball and connects well with team-mates. His five goals made him the highest scoring non-forward at the club, too.

  • Andrew Robertson Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    11Andy Robertson - 6/10

When even Mr. Consistent struggles, you know it's been a tough season. Robertson for so long has been the lungs of this Liverpool team, but even he has been swept under at times by the Reds' issues.

To his credit, he has never stopped fighting, and has modified his role slightly too, attacking a little less as Trent Alexander-Arnold drifts into midfield. A rest and a full pre-season will do the Scot the world of good.

  • Liverpool's Curtis Jones celebratesGetty

    10Curtis Jones - 6/10

A great end to the season for the young Scouser, who started each of the last 11 games and whose performances offer hope for a brighter future.

But injury robbed the 22-year-old of the chance to do even more. He started only two games before the World Cup, and while his form in the spring has been good, he needs more if he is to stick around Klopp's first XI in the future.

  • Luis Diaz Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    9Luis Diaz - 6/10

Another player who endured an injury-hit campaign. Diaz was Liverpool's brightest attacker prior to the knee issue suffered at Arsenal in October, and by the time he returned to action in April, the Reds' campaign had completely unraveled.

Still, the Colombian's energy and positivity has been a welcome addition. He should be stronger next season after a good summer.

  • Diogo Jota Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    8Diogo Jota - 6/10

Speaking of injuries, what about Jota? A hamstring issue to start the campaign, and then a torn calf muscle right when he was starting to ease back to full sharpness.

The Portugal international came good towards the back end of the season, scoring seven times in his last nine appearances. At his best, Jota can be a difference-maker. Liverpool must hope he stays fit from here on.

  • Ibrahima-Konate(C)Getty Images

    7Ibrahima Konate - 6/10

The best of Liverpool's senior centre-back quintet this season, Konate has the potential to establish himself as one of the best in Europe if he can stay fit.

That hasn't been easy over the past 12 months, with the Frenchman missing too many games for Klopp's liking. When he has played, he's generally looked solid. He needs to play more.

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool 2022-23Getty Images

    6Trent Alexander-Arnold - 6/10

A real up-and-down campaign for the Scouser, who endured some truly miserable afternoons and evenings, but whose talent shone brighter than any other at times.

Alexander-Arnold's development into a hybrid full-back/midfielder has been one of the more intriguing subplots to this Liverpool season, and his brilliance on the ball is unrivalled within Klopp's squad. Finding a way to emphasise that, while limiting his obvious defensive flaws, will be key going forward.

  • 20230520 Roberto Firmino(C)Getty Images

    5Roberto Firmino - 7/10

Bye, bye, Bobby. What memories Firmino has left behind on Merseyside. Eight years of magic, of tricks and flicks and brilliance. Of goals and assists and that wonderful, wonderful smile.

He finished his Liverpool career in style, too. A goal on his last Anfield appearance and one in his final appearance for the club, too. Thirteen in total. His goals-per-minute ratio this season was the best at the club.

  • Cody Gakpo Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    4Cody Gakpo - 7/10

The January signing looks like he will be a really smart addition to Klopp's squad. Gakpo has settled in well at Anfield, scoring seven times since his arrival from PSV, and looking every inch the Firmino replacement in that roving No.9 role.

Clean technically, and with a good footballing brain, the Dutch international should be even better next term, now he has his feet under the table.

  • Mo-Salah(C)Getty Images

    3Mohamed Salah - 8/10

Amid the madness, the Egyptian did what he always does this season; he scored goals and influenced games. Salah finished the campaign with 30 goals and 16 assists - quite staggering numbers considering most people would say he was below his best for the most part.

Who could forget that winner against Manchester City in October? The double against Manchester United in the 7-0? Salah missed a couple of penalties which cost his side, but imagine what Liverpool's season would have looked like without him.

  • Stefan Bajcetic Liverpool 2022-23Getty

    2Stefan Bajcetic - 8/10

One of the real finds of the season, Bajcetic made his senior debut against Bournemouth in August and finished the campaign with 19 appearances, establishing himself as a genuine first-team option in the process.

At 18, the Spaniard still has a lot to learn and a lot of growing to do, but his tenacity, composure and mentality mark him out as a special prospect, one who has already won over Klopp, big time.

  • Alisson-Becker(C)Getty Images

    1Alisson Becker - 8/10

If the thought of Liverpool without Salah is frightening, the idea of the Reds without Alisson is unthinkable. Yet again, the Brazilian has been the Premier League's best goalkeeper - ignore the stats - with his presence and ability to make decisive saves unmatched across the division.

Sure, there was the howler against Real Madrid, but Alisson saved his side's skin on countless occasions. He must have been sickened by what was going on in front of him at times, but he never let it show. A top player, a top professional, and the most talented keeper the Reds have ever had.
