    WHAT HAPPENED?

England beat Andorra 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday, turning in a turgid, listless performance against a side ranked 173rd in the world. The Bayern Munich striker scored the only goal of the game, but he was impressed with the performance of Chelsea ace Noni Madueke, who provided the assist for the striker.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

England have played Andorra seven times in their history, and have won by scorelines of 6-0 and 5-0 previously; on Saturday, though, they were kept at arm's length by the minnows throughout, and Kane believes they simply didn't move the ball quickly enough in hot, dry conditions, which is a rather ominous portent ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

  • WHAT KANE SAID

Kane told ITV: "For sure we can play better, it wasn't our greatest performance. I don't think people will remember this one but we can learn from it.

"The June camp is never an easy camp, there are always people coming off the back of a lot of games, long seasons. I think we saw that out here today. It was very hot here, dry pitch, probably similar conditions to next year at the World Cup, so we will go away and analyse.

"We had good spells in the game but we couldn't consistently have attack after attack. We take the three points and move on. We probably weren't good enough on the ball, not enough forward runs, forward passes. The most important thing is we kept giving it away, it gave them confidence, gave them energy.

"At 1-0 with five, ten minutes to go, you have to be careful. It was an important game for us to make sure we got the three points. We just have to learn from it, we got what we needed; three points."

Kane reserved praise for Madueke, adding: "I think he was a constant threat today, obviously got the assist for the goal as well.

"We need more of that. We have amazing players, we need players who are not afraid to go one v one and if they lose the ball, we will get it again and go again. He played really well."
