‘Had a few too many!’ - Aaron Ramsdale explains dad’s drunken ‘class’ blast at Jamie Carragher after ‘Oscars’ quip aimed in the direction of dropped Arsenal goalkeeper

Former Liverpool star Carragher incurred the wrath of Ramsdale senior when saying of a video showing the England international goalkeeper clapping a save from Arsenal team-mate David Raya – the man that has taken his place in the Gunners side: “Thought it was like when someone loses the Oscar and they start clapping and smiling for the other person. He's absolutely devastated with that really.”

Ramsdale’s father hit back by saying on social media: “You are a disgrace!! Show some class!! My lad has!” The Arsenal goalkeeper has now sought to explain that spat, telling reporters: “This isn't the first time my name has been in the press, and it has been more negative stuff, so I have drowned it out before. It doesn't help that my dad does it - but it was on a golf trip in Spain with 19 other lads from the local pub! To be honest, I wasn't too mad at him, he didn't say anything out of turn, it's just wasn't helpful for the situation. He knew that. He obviously just had a few too many on the golf course! I know there's a lot of noise, but it doesn't affect me.”

Ramsdale went on to say when asked if he fears losing his place in the England squad after slipping to second choice in Mikel Arteta’s plans at Emirates Stadium: “Yeah, of course. It is the first time I have found myself in this situation. The manager here (Gareth Southgate) is brilliant. He trusts the players he's worked with before, as we've seen in different types of ways. So if that's the case for myself, and I do get shown that trust to play another game if I haven't played for my club, then I will have to repay him. But of course, I want to get back into my club team and be able to give the manager a headache, rather than just have Jordan (Pickford) as the number one, and me fall by the wayside.”

Ramsdale admits to “suffering and hurting” after finding himself out of favour at Arsenal, with the 25-year-old having made just one Carabao Cup appearance since September 3 – when he last graced a Premier League XI for the Gunners in a 3-1 victory over Manchester United.
