Best MLS players in FIFA 23: Chiellini, Insigne and Bale among top-rated Ultimate Team stars

The division's popularity continues to rise on an annual basis and, subsequently, so do the players competing in the United States.

Those players are available for use both in Ultimate Team and FIFA's other game modes ever since the new iteration of the popular video game franchise released on Friday, September 30.

Some players, such as Gareth Bale, have left MLS since the game's release, but they are still linked to the league on Ultimate Team.

GOAL shares the top 10 players (base ratings) below...

    =7 | Nicolas Lodeiro | CAM | 79

Another one of the five MLS players who were given a 79 rating on FIFA 23, Seattle Sounders captain Nicolas Lodeiro just completed his seventh season for the club.

  • Emanuel Reynoso 2022Getty

    =7 | Emanuel Reynoso | CAM | 79

Emanuel Reynoso is coming off a brilliant season for Minnesota United with 10 goals and six assists in 29 MLS appearances. Because of the level of performance he has been turning in, he has been rewarded with a 79 rating.

  • Javier Hernandez LA Galaxy 2022Getty Images

    =7 | Javier Hernandez | ST | 79

Since leaving Europe for the MLS, Chicharito has stood out for LA Galaxy. He holds a very strong record of 37 goals in 65 MLS games and remains one of the league's most popular figures.

  • Lucas Zelarayan 2021Getty

    =7 | Lucas Zelarayan | CAM | 79

Lucas Zelarayan has made quite the name for himself in the MLS with Columbus Crew. In his 77 career MLS matches, he has scored 28 goals and added 13 assists - a very handy return for an attacking midfielder.

  • Carles GIl New England Revolution 2022Getty Images

    =5 | Carles Gil | CAM | 80

As the fourth CAM on this list already, Carles Gil is the first of those rated 80 and above. He has been excellent for New England Revolution in the last few years and won the Landon Donovan MLS Most Valuable Player award in 2021.

  • Hector Herrera MexicoGetty

    =5 | Hector Herrera | CM | 80

Following a long period of plying his trade in Europe with Porto and Atletico, Hector Herrera chose to make the move to the MLS with Houston Dynamo last summer. The Mexican also appeared at the 2022 World Cup with El Tri.

  • Carlos Vela LAFC 2022Getty Images

    =3 | Carlos Vela | RW | 81

Carlos Vela has been one of the standout players in the MLS since joining LAFC back in 2018. He won the title last year and enjoyed another strong campaign, so he may feel slightly hard done by to see his FIFA rating drop from 83 to 81.

  • Gareth Bale LAFC 2022Getty Images

    =3 | Gareth Bale | RW | 81

There are a number of similarities between Gareth Bale and Vela's FIFA 23 cards. Both are attached to LAFC, both are RW and both are perhaps harshly 81 rated. The decline of the Welshman's rating has continued this edition as he has chosen to explore a new challenge outside of Europe.

Bale has since retired, but his card is still playable on FIFA Ultimate Team.

  • Lorenzo Insigne Toronto FC 2022Getty Images

    =1 | Lorenzo Insigne | LW | 84

There are two players sharing the crown as the highest-rated MLS player in FIFA 23. The first of those is Lorenzo Insigne who somewhat surprisingly swapped Napoli for Toronto FC last summer. He has already shown his quality with six goals and two assists in his abbreviated first season in MLS.

  • Giorgio Chiellini LAFC 2022Getty Images

    =1 | Giorgio Chiellini | LAFC | CB | 84

The other Italian to make the high-profile switch to the MLS last summer is also 84 rated. Giorgio Chiellini made quite the splash when his arrival at LAFC was announced but his highlight at the club so far was the rather strange handball that he somehow avoided a red card for.

  • FUT special cards

In addition to the base cards released at the start of the FIFA 23 Ultimate Team cycle, EA Sports has given MLS fans numerous special edition cards with boosted ratings.

Below are some of the best of those so far:

Gareth Bale (World Cup Stories): 91

Landon Donovan (World Cup Hero): 88

    Gonzalo Higuain (SBC): 88
