    WHAT HAPPENED?

The legendary Rio Carnival runs between February 9 and 17, with Brazil international Luiz missing out as his focus is locked on professional matters at Aston Villa. He was on target in their latest Premier League outing, with parity briefly restored in a meeting with Manchester United.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

After finding the target, Luiz took to shimmying in front of Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana and World Cup-winning defender Raphael Varane. United were, however, to have the last laugh as Scott McTominay stepped off the bench to grab a dramatic winner in a 2-1 victory for the visitors to Villa Park. Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag suggested that Luiz's antics had 'fuelled' his side.

  • WHAT LUIZ SAID

Ex-United defender Ferdinand made the most of opportunity to ask Luiz on social media if he was “ok” after seeing his efforts come to nothing. The 25-year-old, who has rekindled his relationship with fellow Villa star Alisha Lehmann, has refused to take the bait and responded by saying: “I’m good, thanks. It’s just carnival time in Brazil.”

  • WHAT NEXT?

Villa have won just one of their last six games in all competitions, suffering three defeats, and will be back in action next weekend when taking in a trip to Fulham. A positive result will be required there as they have slipped to fifth in the Premier League table.
