  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The Athletic reports that Chivas and the San Jose Earthquakes have reached an agreement over a transfer worth around $4m (£3m) for Cowell. That equates to a club record figure received for San Jose, who will retain a sell-on clause, and there are also performance-related bonuses included in the deal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Chivas have a policy of signing only Mexican players, but they have widened their scope in recent years and are now willing to sign players with Mexican citizenship who have represented other national teams. Cowell received said citizenship last week and his brother, Chance, has played for Mexico at U15 level.

    Cowell has played for San Jose since 2019 and made a total of 114 appearances for the club. He scored 12 goals and registered 12 assists in that time, and his contract was expiring in 2025, but he will now continue his career in Liga MX.
