'I'm actually happy for him' - Brentford chief delighted for Christian Norgaard ahead of Arsenal move and claims Bees captain deserves opportunity to compete for silverware

Arsenal are closing in on a deal for Brentford captain Norgaard, with talks intensifying over the past two weeks. The Gunners, led by sporting director Andrea Berta, have identified the 31-year-old as a valuable addition to their midfield depth. Norgaard, who joined Brentford in 2019, now appears set for a new challenge at the Emirates, and Bees' chief Giles has claimed he is happy for the Dane.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Giles said: "Arsenal approached us in the last two weeks about Christian regularly with Andrea Berta.

"I think it's fair to say it's more likely to happen than not. We have to go through the full process, tick all the boxes and then we'll see at the end of it.

"He's been a fantastic player [for] us, unbelievable. I'm actually happy for him with the opportunity at this stage, 31, at this stage of his career, to have an opportunity to go and try to win some trophies.

"It isn't done yet, but we're aware that if and when he does depart, we have a leadership void to try and fill. Also thinking about Ben Mee, who also left this summer, and Mark Flekken, who's an experienced goalkeeper. We're aware of the squad and the blend of experiences we have in the squad, and we'll look to cover it."

Norgaard’s potential move comes after five influential years at Brentford, during which he captained the club and played a pivotal role in their climb from the Championship to Premier League mid-table mainstays. Though silverware was elusive in West London, a move to North London presents a chance to add trophies to a decorated domestic career built on resilience and leadership.

Arsenal are expected to finalise the deal for Norgaard soon, while also pushing to complete the signing of long-term target Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. With midfield depth a priority and rivals already active in the market, Arteta’s squad rebuild is beginning to gather momentum.
