Borussia Dortmund snubbed? Chelsea's Ian Maatsen set to stay in the Premier League as Aston Villa reach agreement over transfer

Maatsen impressed on loan in Germany last season, helping Borussia Dortmund reach the Champions League final. The club wanted to keep him on a permanent deal but look to have been beaten to his signature by Aston Villa, according to The Athletic.

Villa's move for Maatsen comes as somewhat of a surprise considering the club are under pressure to meet the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules by 30 June. The Daily Telegraph report the overall fee to be around £37.5 million ($48.6m/€44.3m). It is a hefty amount of money for the Villans to fork out considering they may still have to sell in the coming weeks.

Maatsen did not join Dortmund until January 2024, playing 12 times in Premier League matches before that with Chelsea. After moving, the 22-year-old featured 16 times in the Bundesliga, scoring twice and tallying two assists.

While a deal has been agreed between Chelsea and Villa, it does not mean things are completely sealed. The Dutchman will sit down with his potential new employers to discuss a contract and whether a move is something he wants to approve.
