    WHAT HAPPENED?

United States international Pulisic has been in fine form this season, posting more personal bests and career firsts while registering seven goals and three assists through 13 appearances. Those exploits have come on the back of a productive debut campaign at San Siro which allowed the American playmaker to find his feet in Italy.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic is considered to be integral to the Rossoneri cause, with his versatility and end product being embraced by Milan’s coaching staff and loyal fanbase. There has been talk of an extension clause in his contract being triggered as admiring glances from afar are fended off.

    WHAT MORATA SAID

Morata, though, has overlooked Pulisic when picking the cream of Milan’s crop. The Euro 2024-winning Spain international has instead plumped for a man who has been benched for the Rossoneri’s last three league matches. He said of Portuguese forward Rafael Leao: “Rafa has talent. He’s the best player on the team and just needs to keep doing what he’s doing.

“It’s only a phase and, often, it’s like that for attacking players. A big goal or an easy one will be enough for him to get his confidence back. It’s not easy. Everything Rafa does is a story, but he’s so important for us and we need him. He knows that perfectly well. He’s working hard and it’s just a phase. His time will come this season and he’ll make us win.”

  • WHAT NEXT?

Leao has just one goal and three assists to his name this term. That return has led to the 25-year-old forward taking a humbling tumble down the pecking order in Milan, although his ability remains without question and Morata is far from being the only one to retain unwavering belief in the Portugal international.
