Atlanta United reportedly reignite pursuit for Newcastle's Miguel Almiron, looking to bring former Paraguayan club star back to MLS

Atlanta United have reportedly engaged in talks with Newcastle United over a potential deal for Miguel Almiron, with the Paraguayan set for a potentially sensational move back to the MLS side.

Charlotte FC had begun talks with Almiron ahead of the 2025 campaign, but a potential deal cooled off after GOAL confirmed reports that the club is pursuing Ivory Coast international Wilfried Zaha instead -- thus allowing Atlanta to engage in conversation with Newcastle for Almiron.

GiveMeSport revealed the potential transfer on Wednesday, adding that talks are not advanced, but it's become a "real possibility" that the Paraguayan returns back to Atlanta ahead of the 2025 campaign.

The rumored fee for Almiron's signature is $10.39M (£8.5M), and the club has two open Designated Player spots it is looking to fill this offseason. The report added that the club is looking to fill one slot with a striker, and the other with a winger, and Almiron fits the latter.

The club is reportedly targeting Middlesbrough forward Emmanuel Latte Lath and Crystal Palace striker Odsonne Edouard for the striker position, while Almiron appears to be a primary target on the wing.

The Paraguayan has only logged 398 minutes across all competitions in 2024-25, and is in line for a January exit from the Premier League outfit.

Almiron starred with Atlanta in 2017 and 2018, helping them win MLS Cup in his second season. He was a league MVP finalist in 2018 and was named MLS Best XI in both campaigns. He was sold from Atlanta to Newcastle in 2019 for a then-league-record fee of $25.6M (£21M).

Across his two regular seasons in MLS, Almiron scored 21 goals and recorded 28 assists in just 62 appearances. In six postseason appearances, he scored one goal and recorded two assists.

Atlanta will have until the end of January to get a deal done to get Almiron back in its ranks, as the process over a potential transfer is still ongoing. Until then, the club will continue its preseason training sessions as players and staff reported for camp this week. The club's first friendly in training camp comes on Jan. 25 when they take on MLS NEXT Pro side Chattanooga FC.
