    WHAT HAPPENED?

Davies' deal with the Bundesliga giants ends this summer - and Real were said to be keen to sign the player on a free - but The Athletic reports he is set to continue his time in Germany. It is stated that there is now only a small gap between Bayern and the 24-year-old's expectations on a proposed four-year deal.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Davies' contract expiry date of 2025 has interested Madrid for some time, but they look set to miss out on their man. The news will come as a relief to Bayern supporters after their transfer chief Max Eberl had warned earlier on Friday that "patience is not one of my qualities" in reference to talks with the Canadian international. Davies will now extend his seven-year stay in Munich, a period during which he has become established as one of the best left-backs in world football.

    WHAT EBERL SAID

Speaking about Davies' contract situation, Eberl said: "Patience is not one of my qualities but we try to act with facts. We see the reports and speculation: 'A deal fell through, then it's close, then fell through again'. All parties, club and agents are trying to finalise a good contract for the players. We try to come closer together through talks, that's what we did in the past weeks and months. The talks are good and open, discussions are part of that"

  • WHAT NEXT FOR MADRID AND DAVIES?

Missing out on Davies is a blow to Madrid, who have developed a habit of snaring the world's best talent on free transfers. Kylian Mbappe signed for the La Liga champions when his Paris Saint-Germain contract ended last summer, while Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold is widely expected to pen a deal at the Bernabeu on the same basis in 2025. But they look set to miss out on the Bayern left-back, whose initial focus will be winning the Bundesliga title back from Bayer Leverkusen this season.
