JJ Gabriel has been the most wanted man in Europe since informing Manchester United of his desire to leave the club in September. Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich have all been chasing the Enfield-born prodigy, while United officials have toiled in vain to convince him to change his mind.
At one stage, it looked like Barcelona would win the race, as Gabriel spent weeks training in the city with a personal trainer, but it now appears that they've been pipped to the post by their arch-rivals. Real Madrid have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign the 16-year-old on a long-term contract, subject to FIFA regulations on the transfer of minors.
Gabriel is registered with United's academy until the end of the 2026-27 campaign, but Real intend to complete the deal in January, with the teenager possessing a European passport through both parents that allows him to exploit a Brexit loophole and join an overseas club in the next transfer window. There are none bigger than Los Blancos, and Gabriel's decision to swap his comfort zone at Old Trafford for the bright lights at the Santiago Bernabeu speaks to his self-confidence.
According to Sky Sports, Real emerged as Gabriel's first choice because he and his camp see a clear pathway to the first team. However, a quick look at the club's history with young players suggests that is naïve. He will also face more competition for minutes in the Spanish capital than he would have at any other of his suitors, and indeed United.
For all the prestige that comes with wearing that famous white shirt, there is immense pressure to deal with, too. Gabriel will not be trying to follow in the footsteps of a long list of successful academy graduates, but rather buck the trend at a club that has become something of a developmental graveyard.
