Jordan Morris still on the mend for U.S. as critical World Cup qualifier looms

The Sounders star missed another day of training as he recovers from an ankle injury, leaving his status in doubt for Friday's match against Honduras

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The U.S. national team ran through a full training session in a rainy Avaya Stadium on Tuesday, and all but one of the players on the current roster made it onto the field. That one absence has the U.S. forward pool appearing to be in danger of being stretched even thinner than it already is.

Jordan Morris spent Tuesday doing gym work, and U.S. Soccer spokesman Michael Kammarman said the Seattle Sounders striker is "day to day" with the ankle injury he suffered in the Sounders' 3-1 win against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday night.

Morris downplayed the severity of the injury in a post-match interview Sunday, but has yet to take part in training since arriving in camp Monday. If he is unable to play in Friday's crucial World Cup qualifier against Honduras, it would leave Bruce Arena with another missing forward just days after losing Bobby Wood to a back injury.

A healthy Morris would be a reasonable option to start in Wood's place, with his speed a factor that could help break down a Honduras defense that will likely feature a five-man back line and tight defensive structure. With or without Morris, Arena will have to give serious thought to starting Clint Dempsey in a partnership with Jozy Altidore, though he has expressed a desire to limit Dempsey to a super-sub role as the U.S. national team star works his way back from an extended layoff due to a heart condition.

San Jose Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski has been brought into camp as cover if Morris is deemed unavailable, though he seems more likely to be a bench option than a candidate to start, even though Friday's qualifier is being played at Avaya Stadium, where Wondolowski stars for the Earthquakes.
