Manchester City’s five goals at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg should have been enough to see them through to the next round of the UEFA Champions League, if history were any indication.

Unfortunately, for the Citizens, it was not.

When is the Champions League draw?

Goals from Kylian Mbappe, Fabinho and Tiemoue Bakayoko cancelled out a Leroy Sane tally to give Monaco a 3-1 win in the second leg. With the score tied 6-6 on aggregate, City were eliminated on the away goals tiebreaker, 3-1.

As a result, City became the first team in Champions League history to score five goals in their first leg only to be eliminated in the second leg of the knockout tie.

A 5-3 victory in Manchester gave City an edge in the tie. There would be no repeat of that offensive display in Monaco however, as City were held without a shot in the first half of the match.

The team bounced back in the second 45, having numerous chances to break through before Sane finally did so in 71st minute to put City in position to go through to the quarter-finals.

But the Citizens would come to rue their earlier missed chances as Bakayoko put Monaco back in front in the tie six minutes later.

Factor in that it was first time City manager Pep Guardiola was knocked out of Champions League play in the round of 16 and it was a night of unwanted firsts for the Premier League side.
