Liverpool have announced that forward Sadio Mane has undergone surgery on a suspected broken thumb.

Mane suffered the injury while in training with Senegal and was held out of his country's 1-0 win over Sudan on Tuesday, which clinched a place at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

"Liverpool Football Club can confirm Sadio Mane today underwent a procedure on a hand injury sustained while on international duty with Senegal," a statement read.

"The surgery, conducted at a north-west hospital and supervised by club medics, was successful.

"Mane’s recovery will be monitored over the next couple of days ahead of the Reds’ return to action at Huddersfield Town on Saturday."

Should Mane be forced to miss time it would be a blow for Liverpool, as the 26-year-old has netted four goals this season while continuing to impress alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the club's forward line.

Mane's injury was part of a difficult international break for the Reds, who saw several stars injured while away with their respective national teams.

Naby Keita sustained a hamstring problem while playing for Guinea, while Salah suffered an injury with Egypt and Virgil van Dijk was sent home from Netherlands duty with a recurrence of his rib injury.

Keita appears to be out for the Huddersfield match, while Salah and Van Dijk could be in contention to feature.

Liverpool are currently level on points with Man City and Chelsea atop the Premier League table, but are in third place on goal differential.
