England's Under-21 side can book a place in the European Under-21 Championship final by beating their German counterparts in Tychy on Tuesday.

Aidy Boothroyd's side beat Slovakia and hosts Poland and drew with Sweden in the first round to finish top of Group A and advance to the last four of the competition.

That has earned them a date with Germany at Stadion Miejski, with Stefan Kuntz's men having progressed to the knockout rounds as the best runner up of the three groups.

Germany beat the Czech Republic and Denmark without conceding a goal but were then defeated by Italy, edging into the semi-finals ahead of Slovakia by a single goal.

SQUADS & TEAM NEWS

PositionEngland players
Goalkeepers Pickford, Gunn, Mitchell
Defenders Holgate, Chilwell, Chambers, Stephens, Targett, Holding, Hause, Iorfa, Mawson
Midfielders Chalobah, Ward-Prowse, Baker, Swift, Hughes, Grealish
Forwards Gray, Abraham, Redmond, Murphy, Woodrow

Nathaniel Chalobah and Nathan Redmond will have late fitness tests for England after suffering injuries against Poland, with new Watford signing Will Hughes and Jacob Murphy likely to step in if they are not ready to play.

Boothroyd has preferred a 4-4-2 diamond system thus far, deploying two natural wingers in Redmond and Demarai Gray up front.

Potential starting XI: Pickford; Holgate, Chambers, Mawson, Chilwell; Chalobah; Ward-Prowse, Baker; Swift; Redmond, Gray.

PositionGermany players
Goalkeepers Schwabe, Pollersbeck, Vlachodimos
Defenders Toljan, Gerhardt, Anton, Stark, Jung, Klunter, Kempf, Kehrer
Midfielders Meyer, Dahoud, Arnold, Weiser, Amiri, Haberer, Oztunali, Kohr
Forwards Selke, Gnabry, Platte, Philipp

Germany have a fairly established starting XI and are unlikely to make major changes to the team that lost 1-0 against Italy despite the disappointing performance.

Kuntz could, however, bring in Maximilian Philipp for Mitchell Weiser on the right of midfield. Philipp recently agreed to leave Freiburg for Borussia Dortmund for a rumoured €20 million.

Potential starting XI: Pollersbeck; Toljan, Stark, Kempf, Gerhardt; Dahoud, Arnold; Philipp, Meyer, Gnabry; Selke.

GAME PREVIEW

England were gifted a relatively simple group at the European Under-21 Championship, but now the real test begins.

The Young Lions have grown into this tournament and having now met expectations by reaching the semi-finals, they may be able to play with more freedom against a Germany side for whom second place will not offer much satisfaction.

The German national team is the favourite for nearly every competition it enters at every age group these days, which is testament to their remarkable pipeline of talent.

It does put pressure on them to perform to the levels that have come to be expected, though, even when they are not at full strength - as is the case at this tournament, with many of their best players picked for the Confederations Cup instead.

The likes of Timo Werner, Leon Goretzka and Niklas Sule, to name but three, are eligible for this Under-21 competition but playing for Germany's senior side instead.

That will give Aidy Boothroyd hope that his team can build on the success of the England Under-20 side, who won their World Cup in South Korea earlier in the summer, and the Under-17s, who reached the final of their European Championship in May.

With established players such as Jordan Pickford, Calum Chambers and Nathan Redmond in their ranks, this should not be another England versus Germany match in which the English find themselves outclassed or overawed.
