Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he expected to play for Arsene Wenger for more than a few months but has learned a lot from the departing Arsenal manager.

Aubameyang scored the decisive goal on Sunday as the Gunners won 1-0 at Huddersfield to ensure Wenger's 22-year reign at the club ended on a high.

It was the striker's 10th goal in 14 games since joining from Borussia Dortmund in January and he feels it was a good way to wave goodbye to his respected boss, even if the end of their partnership comes earlier than expected.

“I thought he would be at Arsenal for years,” Aubameyang told Standard Sport. “But this is life. This is football. Sometimes you never know.

"But I was happy to play for him. I learned a lot in not a lot of time to work with him. I am happy to be here.

“Sunday was important for us because it was the last game for the boss. It was important to win this game for him. It was special.”

The 28-year-old has been a key player for Arsenal in the second half of the season, and although they underwhelmed by finishing sixth in the Premier League, he is happy with his performances and the club's future.

“At the beginning, it was really hard because physically I was not ready,” the Gabon international added. “I did not play in January, all month, so it was not easy.

“But after big work with the staff, I found my form again. I scored some goals and thanks to my team-mates, of course, because we work for that.

“These last few weeks we played well and we have a lot of young players. It is good for the future and I am sure next season will be a good season.”
