'I have to be realistic' - Wrexham women's star Hannah Keryakoplis announces shock retirement from football at 29 after 'frustrating' 2023-24 campaign

The Welsh forward, who joined The Red Dragons in the summer, has officially announced her retirement from professional football at the age of 29 due to injuries. Keryakoplis scored a goal on his debut for the club in a 3-3 draw against Swansea City in their season opener.

Speaking to Wrexham's official website after announcing her retirement, she said, "It has been a very difficult decision to make after a frustrating season for me personally, but I have to be realistic about – and also protect – my future health. As well as what was best for me, I hope the timing of the decision will assist the Club in being able to assess their options in the transfer window.

"I am proud to have played in the Women’s Super League and to have represented my country, and was also so proud to be able to pull on a Wrexham shirt, following in my great-grandfather’s footsteps, and to score on my debut too. I’d like to wish Steve, the staff and the players all the very best for the remainder of the season, which I will be following keenly as a supporter."

After graduating from Liverpool's youth system, the Wales international made her professional debut for the Reds in 2010 and spent three seasons at the club. She later played for Stoke City, Birmingham City and Derby County before joining Wrexham in 2023. Keryakoplis made her international debut in 2011 and represented the Wales national team in 20 matches.

Steve Dale's side, who are currently third in the Welsh Premier Women's League, will be next seen in action on Wednesday as they take on The New Saints.
