    WHAT HAPPENED?

Wrexham's Jack Marriott and Sheffield United midfielder Sydie Peck both received yellow cards for their part in the fracas after Sebastian Revan scored a late consolation for the Red Dragons in their 4-2 defeat. Peck, the game's man of the match, prevented Marriott from getting the ball, much to the Wrexham forward's frustration. The pair grabbed each other as they tussled in the back of the Blades' net, and players from both sides joined in as a brawl ensued.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Marriott and Wrexham's emotions were understandable, following a game in which they were eventually outclassed by their Championship opponents. The score was 1-1 at half-time, Will Boyle giving Phil Parkinson's side a surprise lead, but Sheffield United quickly equalised through USMNT defender Auston Trusty before turning the screw in the second half.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

It's not the first time these two clubs have clashed. Back in the 2022-23 season the pair met in the FA Cup, with Blades striker Billy Sharp accusing the then-National League side of "disrespect" in the build-up to their fourth-round tie.

    WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM?

With dreams of a cup run extinguished at the first hurdle, Wrexham will turn their attentions to Sunday's clash against Bolton. Both clubs are expecting to be in the hunt for promotion from League One this season and the game at Toughsheet Community Stadium looks set to be a thriller.
