When that question was put to Saunders, the ex-Red Dragons boss – speaking in association with <a href="https://www.888sport.com/football/ " target="_blank"><em>888sport</em></a> – told <strong>GOAL</strong>: “I think people are hooked into it. They are following the story. I know what you mean, it will get to a point where we drew, we lost, we drew, we lost, there’s not a lot happening. The main story is, climbing the impossible ladder from the Conference up the ladder to the Premier League – that is the story. </p><p>“They did say they were going to do it, and we all laughed! They are only two steps away from doing it. They have got big clubs chasing them now – Huddersfield, Barnsley, Bolton Wanderers have all been in the Premier League not that long ago and are all chasing Wrexham right now. They are competing against players that are on £15-20,000-a-week. Wrexham’s players are probably earning five, 10, some of them on three grand a week. When you go up to the Championship there are players on £100,000-a-week still from the Premier League. There is a different class of player. </p><p>“It is like any sport – racehorses, some run at Wolverhampton on a Tuesday night and some run at Ascot. They will stand out at that level. It’s going to be hard for them but the manager is doing a great job, the fans are right behind the club and they are expecting to win every time they go out on the pitch – which is brilliant.”</p>

WHAT SAUNDERS SAID

<p>Wrexham have, on the back of <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/wrexham-first-1m-signing-coming-ex-manager-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney-poach-young-talent-premier-league-liverpool-arsenal/blt37b8a719629ae949 " target="_blank">more investment from Reynolds and McElhenney</a>, remained fiercely competitive in League One this season. They <a href="https://www.goal.com/en-gb/lists/believe-phil-parkinson-ted-lasso-wrexham-premier-league-push-dream-ryan-reynolds-rob-mcelhenney/blt8bc7c2a7ddbf4bde" target="_blank">sit third in the table as things stand</a> and will be back in action on Saturday when taking in a trip to old adversaries Stockport.</p>
