There was plenty for him to do when a cross from the left was chipped towards the back post. Mbappe met the delivery on the half-volley from eight yards out, with it vital that he made a clean connection and kept his shot down. He did just that as the ball bounced into the top corner.

Wild celebrations were sparked, with Mbappe wheeling away in delight. His first instinct was to jump into the folded arms pose that has become synonymous with his World Cup-winning brother. Various other routines were worked through after opening his personal goal account in memorable fashion.
